I am a first year student for the fall 2012 semester. Regarding changing from ChemE to ECE, I have been told that I won't be able to have my major switched until sophomore year. However, I have seen this on the school's website regarding inter-departmental transfers:

Application Periods:

Engineering has traditionally accepted ICT requests any time of the year. If approved before the tenth day of classes in any given semester, transfer can be effective for that semester. After that, it will be made effective for the following semester.

Am I misreading this or does this mean I can switch to ECE for my first semester if I have it approved early enough?

I’m pretty sure that is only true for after freshman year. You can’t change majors freshman year.

That is for those who are transfering after freshman year. There is some possiblity to transfer into second semster but you will need sophomore standing at end of first semester to try to do so. In other words, if you came in with a lot of AP credits (e.g., 15 or more), the second semester could be the beginning of your sophomore year and you could potentially attempt a transfer between the time you get your first semester grades and first week af second semester as long as you have completed (via AP or college class work) the required freshman math and sciecne courses needed to change. That is something you need to take up with your advisor.
