I just recently had an interest for NYU. I am entering my senior year and heard that NYU is pretty harsh on the financial aid. Also I hear that they really dont have a campus. Is this true? What are some pluses about this school?

well yes they are quite stingy about financial aid.. especially to international students. i have to work my ass off for 10 years to pay off my loans lol.

and yes there is no campus... NYU is like a series of buildings around some blocks. when you walk out of CAS to go to the Bobst library, you'll be walking onto NYC. This may or may not be a good thing...to be honest I've yet to adjust to it.

10 years to PAY OFF LOANS?! how expensive is this school?!

no im jk... but it is one of the most expesnive schools in the states.

NYU has Washington Square Park right outside the door of most of its buildings--this can function as a place to hang out but it is a public NewYork City park. Also numerous bars, caf

its over $40,000 a year, and NYC is the campus, you are not isolated on a traditional campus, there is no "entrance" and "exit" to the campus. Its cool though

if you're looking at tisch, it's approx 48 grand. don't expect much of a financial aid package either.

what if its really needed... like your parents make less than 60,000 a year

Nobody cares.

(I speak from experience.)

haha touche danielJ
do a loan

Please do not say that nobody cares. I'm sorry if your financial aid package did not work out satisfactorily. Yes, for a Tisch student, tuition/room/board costs $48,000. My daughter just entered and got a Trustee Scholarship for $20,000/year. She also got loans as well. So, maybe this is not typical but it does happen.

There is no enclosed campus. Many of the buildings are located around Washington Square but NOT all of them are. My daughter's dorm is not, nor is where she will be going to classes several days per week. It is not for everyone but it is a school that my D really liked as an applicant and so far likes after being there several days.

Susan

Susan, in terms of financial aid, your daughter and your family are very, very fortunate. Very.

In my experience, as well as the experience of many NYU students with whom I have spoken, the school's usual attitude toward students with less than adequate financial aid is one of somewhat haughty disdain. In looking for help, I have been told (more than once) by NYU officials that being a student at NYU is a "privilege", and that if I am not willing to pay, there are many others who are and who are ready and willing to take my place (i.e. - at full price).

Very often....much too often, in fact, it seems as though it's all about money at NYU.

Daniel, I realize that my daughter is fortunate. This is a merit award first, and then the amount was affected by financial need. Needless to say, we were wonderfully surprised by it. I understand where you are coming from and your experience and that of friends, but I think it is fair to also put out there that some kids have gotten scholarships. I am only talking of our experience and you are talking of yours and both are real. So far, for us, we have not had the experience or attitude that you have come across at the school. It has been all positive so far...being admitted, getting a Trustee Scholarship and also being selected as a University Scholar (that part is not a financial award but has other perks which include paid trips). So, I am just putting out there some other experiences but do recognize and validate that yours are real too. I just don't want to make a blanket statement that the school does not care, because for us, that has not been true.

Susan

Understood, Susan, and I sincerely wish you and your family the best experience possible! :-)

Regards,

Daniel,
Hope you have a great year at NYU yourself.
Susan

I've seen your stats you posted up I believe a week ago. You definitely have the stats to get into NYU and get sum serious scholarships from various places. Apply though! If you get in, you opened more options for yourself. (opportunity-wise)
