I applied a few weeks ago to UDel and I got an interesting letter today from them. It explained why we won't hear until mid-March and how it's because they take much more care examining applications. Seemed very defensive......probably a reaction to all their competitors letting us know months before. Did others get this letter? Has this been an issue in the past? It is for me.....I've already heard from Indiana and Pitt (both in) and expect to hear from PSU soon and UMD weeks before UDel. I may have my decision close to done by the time I hear.

I think they actually do try to consider the entire application. not just the numbers. If I remember correctly, my son got a similar letter when he applied 2 years ago.

UD tends to be on the later side with their letters. A few years ago, I know of students who didn’t hear until late March, even early April. If you really want to go there, though, I think it is worth waiting for.

My s got the letter too. He’s applying to a ton of schools and more and more are becoming “Rolling” or EA with decision dates from 12/1 to March. Because Delaware is a state school competitive with many of the others, it does pose a hurdle for them to get over. I think of it as a “save the date”. As much as I hate to admit it, UD is lower on his list and he’s in 3 already…and by March…hopefully several more. The game’s getting shorter and shorter and so are the kids “enthusiasm” and patience levels. Outstanding school though. Many of his acceptances are already strong arming for deposits, it’s interesting to see how this will play out.

The late acceptances certainly makes the whole thing harder. UDel was the second to last school D heard from (SUNY Bing was last) and while she got in and it was one of her top choices, it was a bit anticlimactic. I understand where OP is coming from – D got deferred at her other top choice (and financially possible) school at the end of January; if she had gotten in for Fall, I’m sure she would not have waited for the UDel letter. What makes it worse for OOS is that Del residents hear so much earlier (and OOS hears earlier for SUNY Bing - not fair).

To UDel’s credit, it has been getting harder to get into so many students are waiting for the UDel letter before making their decision.

It was bothersome that we heard from UDel so late last year and, as LINYMOM says, in-state students heard much earlier, so there were serious pins and needles! The best program of its kind in the country is at UD, so it was my daughter’s first choice, which made it much, much harder to wait. The acceptance was lovely, though. The video still brings tears to my eyes.

Despite the agony of waiting and unless you went EA or ED, I think that most decisions are due in at schools by May 1st. EA or ED means just that so yes, you’d need to decide before you heard in March/April from UDel if that was the stip from any of the EA or ED schools. Some game huh? I think all the schools pressure for deposits once accepted. Yet, you’re trying to make a good decision for the next four years and thousands of $.
Also, last year, UDel had a record breaking number of applications so it took them longer than expected to wade through them. As the rep grows so will the applications. I doubt that the letter was intended to be defensive. They probably anticipate a boost of incoming apps even more for this year’s incoming class since they are currently running a large campaign for “Be a Blue Hen.”

D. got a phone call from UDel on March 12 (OOS-Honors Program) but waited until April 1 to hear from other schools and decide. We almost needed to put down a deposit elsewhere due to the timing, but UDel won. She’s happy there. Things had a way of working out.

Delaware was my daughter’s first choice and it was the very last school she heard from on March 19th so the wait to hear was grueling. While that is late to hear when many other schools release their decisions earlier, there are still lots of schools, the ivies for instance, that dont release their decisions til April 1st. I guess the schools figure if it is a school where you want to attend , like it was for my daughter, than you will happily wait . I thought Delaware was very good about keeping their website current on the status of the decision release date.

Delaware is rolling for in state.
