I was recently accepted to Boston College into the School of Arts & Sciences.

When I applied I was certain I wanted to be in A&S, but now after consideration I think I would prefer the Carroll School of Management. I was wondering if it is possible (and if anyone has any experience) to change from A&S to CSOM in advance? I’m planning to contact BC today either by phone or e-mail. I assume I should contact admissions, correct?

Either way, I will more than likely be going to BC in the fall, so if anyone has any insight into an internal transfer after freshman year (difficulty, requirements, etc.) that would be helpful as well.

I am in the same exact situation, but I applied to A&S economics instead of CSOM economics by accident while applying. When I received my acceptance letter I was quite confused.
I called them yesterday and asked about internal transfers and was told that those who want to transfer must try at the end of freshman year.
Anyone know of any appeal process or other way to transfer into CSOM before enrolling? I really want to attend BC, but I do not want to waste my time in the wrong school with no guarantees of being able to transfer internally.

I don’t believe you can transfer schools before your freshman year. This is to guard against people applying for an “easier” school and then switching to the school with the more difficult admissions process (it’s only speculated that CSOM is more difficult to get into than CAS, but I’d assume this is true). Once at BC, it is extremely difficult to transfer into CSOM from any of the other schools. When I asked this question on a campus tour, the tour guide said they take maybe a handful of internal transfers every year. So if you do plan on attending BC and transferring internally, makes sure your grades are as perfect as possible and find some way to get involved and prove you deserve to be in CSOM.

This comes up pretty frequently. The bad news: it’s VERY hard to transfer internally to CSOM. The good news: A&S students can take (on an override basis) up to 8 CSOM classes. This lets you cherry-pick courses most useful to you. I’d start with Financial Accounting since accounting is the language of business. Then, take the intro course to whatever you’re most interested in (if it’s accounting, Managerial Accounting would be next). That will give you an idea as to whether you’d like to take more advanced courses. Otherwise, you’ve got an arts/sciences degree which is a good thing. Relax.

Yes, it is VERY difficult to transfer into CSOM. For the class of 2016, it is straight-up as I have been told by my A&S friends, “Impossible” and “Not allowed”, due to the amount of CSOM kids this year. With the ranking of the B-school going up, I think it will only get more stringent.

That being said, I’m double-majoring in A&S economics with a Finance degree if you want to ask any questions about that (I’m in CSOM).

Economics is not a bad major to be in the business field either though! It’s quantitative and theoretical–a nice break from finance/accounting.
