Hey,

First of all, applogies for using this new anonymous account.

I got into Cornell this year and I'm thinking of transferring to CAS econ after this fall semester. I know, you guys will find it strange that a freshman wants to transfer without giving my major a try, but I have no choice. Considering my familiy's financial circumstances, I cannot afford to pay $200,000 or so. Fortunately I just managed to get some sort of sponsorship from someone, but there's a catch. He'll give me the money ONLY IF I major in economics.

So, I'd like to transfer to CAS econ as soon as possible. I know a freshman must take at least a semster to transfer into another college, so I'll have to wait until a spring semester. I heard that I cannot directly transfer to A&S after taking just one semester, so I have to apply to the ITD to be sponsored. Can anyone tell me how hard it will be and what I have to do in order to successfully transfer to CAS econ? What are the requirements (taking particular courses, earning a specified grade-point-average determined by the college) that are outlined in the letter of sponsorship?

Also, I heard that although the ITD essentially guarantees transfer, there's no gurantee that I'll be sponsored by the target college. Anyone know how hard the sponsorship selection process is? Also could anyone tell me how the target college determines sponsorship?

I called several offices at Cornell, but I'd like to know more specifics like requirements and sponsorship criteria. I can't take a gamble and lose what I gained. I might be looking fairly too far ahead, but for me it's a matter of attending Cornell or giving it up.

Help me and I'll really appreciate it.

Everything you need to know is here:

Cornell Internal Transfer Division

says that 95% of students applying through ITD make it to their intended college....as long as GPA requirements are met.

I heard transfer through ITD is guranteed only if I get sponsored by a target college. I have no idea how hard the sponsorship process would be...

What college are you in? If you are in ILR, Human Ecology, or AEM you can basically major in economics without having to transfer. I would actually only recommend transferring if you are interested in getting a well-rounded, liberal arts education.

But yes, ITD is pretty easy to do, provided you have the academic track-record. I think a "guarantee" requires a 3.0 or higher.

Well the problem is, he insists on economics degree only.

This whole thread is bizarre.

^ I was thinking the same thing.

bizarre?! When I was writing this stuff, I thought I'm sort of pathetic.

yeah...it sucks that money has to dictate what you study. But...work with ITD...they'll help you through the whole thing.

BTW...what college are you supposed to be entering?

Well, how many kids get $200,000 from an individual with the clear specification that you need to have a 'B.A. in Economics'?

The ITD is pretty easy to do. Don't sweat it.

Well...I do agree it's a generous offer, and I hope the OP has a genuine interest in economics otherwise his/her 4 years at Cornell may not be the OP wanted them to be.

But all of that aside....like CayugaRed said, ITD is easy. Make sure you contact them early on in the fall to find out everything you need to do. As long as follow the requirements set forth by your target college you'll be able to successfully transfer. Good luck with everything!

Um I like economics, so that would be no problem I guess....
OK I'll give it a shot. Thank you!
