How tough is it for an international to get in to CAS? From what other people have posted, I'm guessing that Cornell only accepts exceptionally gifted internationals. How true is this?

Come on guys! 252 views and STILL no reply?

It is generally a bit harder than for a domestic applicants - CAS is selective already too. It’s not so much “gifted” that will get you in, it’s just how those factors are presented in your app. I wouldn’t say scoring high on SATs makes one gifted.

I know that looking at SATs alone doesn’t give the complete picture, but what is the scoring range for a gifted student?

… What… you know there is no classification for “gifted” students. There is a classification for international students but it is not shown.
Just aim for the 75th percentile in terms of scores. It’s the other things that will get you in.

@Colene: Yeah, I know. I mistook your “wouldn’t” for a “would” in your last post.

^yay another international student!! I’m kinda worried about my chances as well I took the Jan SAT and I’m hoping for 1500+ in CR+M, but even then I don’t know if it’ll be enough.

International, eh? What country are you from?

I’m from the Caribbean…you?

I’m from Pakistan. Have you applied for aid?

yup! but I know Cornell is kinds notorious for skimping on aid to internationals

I’ve applied too. Oh well, at least they’re need-blind. What college are you applying to?

please understand the difference between admissions and finnacial aid - at the Ivy League schools they are two separate offices -

Admissions is need -blind - meaning they do not know if you are requesting financial aid.

FinAid for Domestic students is need-based…meaning Cornell says they will meet your full-need if admitted. Need. not Want. If the financial aid formula shows they your family should contribute $20,000/year towards your education, but your parents don’t want to, Cornell will not make up the difference.

Finaid is very limited for Int’l students.

I have asked for 20k aid per year ,is that a total turn off for adcoms

where on the app can you even ask that?

did you read what I said - Admissions is need blind.

I’m an international student from Nigeria applying to AAP. Is it possible to ask for how much of financial aid you’d need??

It’s considerably harder for internationals requiring financial aid to get in, esp. when most colleges in the US seem to be quite tight with money these days. However, I doubt chances for international students not applying for financial aid are significantly different from those of home applicants. I’m from Hong Kong and two out of about 4-5 classmates of mine got in ED (of course, ED acceptance rate is higher).

@Anita: Yes, you have to apply for financial aid. Go to the College Board website, register (if you haven’t already done so), and apply for aid by filling out the CSS Profile. If you’ve already applied to Cornell, then I’m afraid that it’s too late to apply for financial aid because their deadline was January 2.

I applied for aid already, but I couldn’t fill the CSS Profile cuz of my nationality, so I filled the international student financial aid app instead. That’s probably why I didn’t get that option. Anyways, did any of you have an interview or anything like that???
