300 odd? okay that's not as bad as i thought...

oh wait. doesn't that push the admission rate to 10%??? which, is kinda unheard of at Amherst or any other LAC for that matter...

wait here are the exact numbers :

applied - 6789
admitted - 621

intels - 78

waitlist - 300 odd

define 'bad'

oh i was thinking like 1000 ppl were waitlisted haha... BUT that's an admission rate of 9.1%???????????????????????? what happened to amherst dis year??????????? 6789 apps??? most top LACs have 4000-5000... fine williams had 6002, but 6789?! ok, maybe, it IS bad. then again, how can they accept only so few? amherst's yield rate isn't usually fantastic considering it competes with HYPW for students... or is that just RD figures?

offtopic: woebegone, u were right about Upenn. it's not need blind for intels. i randomly took an ivy school, i thought all ivies except cornell nad stanford (not ivy but...) are not intel need blind.

yup that data shud be correct, i got it frm an admission officer . .

i didnt expect amhersts adm rate to be greater than 8 even . . swarthmores was pretty low . .

a 9.1 is pretty neat IMHO, sonsidering that they are/were ranked 1 on usnews

That can't be right. Amherst usually admits around 1000, and this year they hover between 900ish and 1000ish (yielding 400ish for the Class of '10). No way they can admit only 621; they have to make room for the majority who won't matriculate. Even when the 120 ED admits are counted (for a total of 741), it still doesn't add up.
Risha, we're in for a bit of speculative math here. Mind quoting the source?

banedon: yeah ironically cornell is actually semi-need-blind but stingy. and brown is definitely not need-blind! (yeah i'm still bearing a grudge)

rishabh: well, 9.1% is so low that in previous years, only Harvard and Yale ocassionally hit it. Amherst's usually ranges around 18%, and it's the most selective LAC with that already. So I'm really curious how it manages to slice the admission rate by half this year...

hmm queer . . it was my moms sister who lives in MA, she called the admissions office talked to the person who handled my app, and asked questions about number of people admitted and stuff . . etc

how many did swarthmore let in ?

i think their rate was around 10 as well

woebgone - their is definately some jumble with my numbers , i shall check again and get back soon . .

well the numbers are all mixed up..

LAst yr all colleges witnessed a huge rise in yield among enrollements that caused them to decrease their admissions this yr.. now ironically this yr the cause turned upside down, with a sudden massive upsurge in the average number of schools applied by each student.. while the yield is sure to go down in this .. the biggest looosers became the not so perfect applications or not the absolute stellar apps and the INTERNATIONAL applicants..

Universities admitted lesser ppl..but the lesser ones had already got in at other gr8 places tooo... due to arnd 10 other apps.. this led to massive rejections for teh majority intels .. like us .. and well here we are now..

If u come to think of it.. it was totally unexpected by the university also..time and situation caused this .. and well.. so except a gud amt of benefit frm waitlist ONLY if u havent applied for aid. coz i see univs getting evil now,...coz the ball is in their hands..

SM

im not scared of the aid part now . .
ive raised my side of the offer to 50% +

so i dont need more than half as much aid as i needed before !

cool.. that is sure to help you more than ever...

SM

plus - both my parents are Professors , and are in the field of education. almost all the people ive asked have said that if both parents are from education then universities look at their paying capacity differently . . .

pay scales for teachers here in india are crap as you may know . . so im not worrying of the finaid part

erm wat are AP's??

Advanced Placements. They're tests, orginating from CollegeBoard (yes, them evil money-suckers). Most high schools in the U.S. have them. Scale of 1-5, 5 being the highest. Ranges from Spanish to various types of Physics to various types of Economics to various types of Maths. One year syllabus, usually taken end of junior or senior year.

AP's are Approved Permits which legally allows an individual or company to import a foreign vehicle for the purpose of marketing and sales.

hahaah that was strangely also not funny banedon...

SM

anyways i thought i would mark this celebration here as well...

the 1st ever 1000th post of the International RD thread .... cooll
