International SAT scores

Well I'm a definite supporter of the SAT exam in the US. Without any standardization technique for High Schools, it's definitely required.
As to the other country point, I see that as the difference between top US colleges and others. They've got enough qualified applicants to chose their own student pool as they wish to. Most top colleges also Humanities requirement for the same reason, they want their student body to be multidimensional, not only in one sphere. I suppose Graduate school is a different story though.

arnt our ''multidimensionness'' defined by our stats n our ECs???

Well SATs and Grades serve as qualifications for consideration. Then come ECs and Awards etc...

THAT'S Y..................SAT 1 only tests us in english(maths too but mot much..)...n the same can b achievd by SAT2 n TOEFL/IELTS...so,where is the real importance for SAT 1??....as for standardization tests....arnt individual country's testing system r considerd as ''standard'' enough??

You see, TOEFL's no test of English, it's pitiful in its standard. 9th Graders could do it easily. Again, the purpose of the college admissions process is directed towards US citizens primarily, and therefore since there is a lack of standardization amongst schools there, that would explain the presence of the SATs.
Furthermore, SAT IIs aren't a measure of the US High School system's syllabus strength as a whole. The APs are equivalent to other schooling systems throughout the world.

I think u got my point indirectly.....I hav said earlier(in some thread) that SAT1 is basically to giv local students an A+ advantage over int'l students.......isnt this a bad biasing??(esp. if we consider US top schools..who r defined to search for good applicants from anywhere in the world!!..)..

I agree with k_twin, SAT and GPA are only important to the point where they demonstrate to the collges that the particular student can handle the courseload. After that they take in ECs, Essay and Awards into account. If you have stellar ECs and stuff. They accept you and if you don't then you really need to have great SAT scores & a great GPA.

Well, in fact I see their primary purpose as providing education to domestic students. Frankly they're some of the only colleges in the world that have a significant International population, how many International students can you think of who study in Indian schools?
Perhaps a more correct assessment would be that they're biased toward students for whom English has been a primary language of instruction. In case of a different schooling format, I suppose the admissions committee takes that into account while evaluating an application.

^nice one. :D

CR is abnormal. Math... geck! I know i could've done better but looking at numbers makes my mind go blank!

I'm an Indian living in Hong Kong and I just retook the SATs in November. My scores are as follows:

May 2006 SAT Is

CR: 780
Math: 700
Writing: 670 (Essay 8)

Oct 2006 SAT IIs

Math IIC: 700
Physics: 710
English Literature: 730

Nov 2006 SAT Is

CR: 800
Math: 780
Writing: 610 (Essay 8)

So now my composite is:

CR: 800
Math: 780
Writing: 670

1580/1600 | 2250/2400

those are good numbers....infact really good...

Thanks... the ridiculous thing is that I'm only applying to two US schools - one as my reach and one as my safety.

For my reach (Stanford) those scores aren't that great. For my safety (Texas, Austin), well... I REALLY hope I get to go to one of my in-between (Canadian) schools. :)

UT Austin is one of the top 25 universities in the world, so unless your stats are exceptionally exceptional you shouldn't really consider it a safety.

Btw, which Canadian unis are you applying to?

I disagree, UT Austin can be considered safety for people with his SAT scores. UT Austin is big on SAT scores.

UT Austin is a HUUUGE school.
so I guess they really depend on SAT marks+school grades for admission much more than the personal qualities of an applicant.

NBZ - Canadian schools I'm applying to are as follows:

McGill/Waterloo are my reaches
UToronto/UBC are Targets
Queens is safety

I plan on sending my SAT scores to these schools just in case they factor in on their decisions.

And yes, I know UT Austin is a brill school, especially for engineering, but I think my stats are decent enough. The only thing that I think would hurt me is the C I got for my AS History. I'm predicted a B though and I hope that they'll consider the fact that the British GCE system is more difficult than the American system, plus the fact I'm really good at Math (Doing Further Math at A-level) and decent at Physics.

CR:530,MATH:730,WRITING:630.what can i do?

You can retake in JAN:hehe..

besides giving SAT 1 more time
