I am an International student. I can't afford summer. How do students usually spend their summers who can't afford to return back to their home countries?

If I choose to return to my home country, it will cost me around $2200 ($1200 + $1000 to and fro flight cost).

If I choose to remain on campus, it will cost around $3000.

Either ways I can't afford. Can you suggest something?

Summer job around school that is an off-campus job… Look for them. It’ll help you pay for your summer to stay at school

Thanks for the response, Lauren.

Bump.

Need more

It’s not just international students who have this problem – many kids on financial aid do. Try looking for a job on campus or off, or an internship. I believe Tufts has a program to provide funding for approved, unpaid internships, and other programs for summer research stipends. You could look into these, although it may be too late for this summer – this is the sort of thing you have to think about many months in advance.

Our son has applied for several AmeriCorps jobs, which provide a living stipend for community-service-type work over the summer, and then an education award of about $1,000 at the end of the summer, to be applied to education expenses. It’s not a lot of money, but it would be enough to get him through the summer – we’re keeping our fingers crossed. You might want to try something like this, macbook. Here is the website:

[AmeriCorps.gov > Which Program Is Right for Me?](http://www.americorps.gov/for_individuals/choose/index.asp)

I’m not sure if this may be only for U.S. citizens, but it’s worth checking into. And as I mentioned, other jobs and internships would probably also be open to you, but I would hurry, as summer is approaching quickly!

You could also see about staying with a friend at their family home over the summer, possibly also getting a job wherever that is, to be able to pay for extra expenses and contribute th the family food costs.

You should probably discuss this situation with your faculty advisor – right away – to see if they have suggestions. Good luck!

supportivemom’s suggestions are right on. macboook is actually in the class of 2015, though, so he still has a full year to decide!

supportivemom - Oh! that was very helpful. Thank you!

000ace000 - Yes, you are right!
