International student chances :))

Hi guys, what do you think about my chances? I am an international student from Kazakhstan. My SAT scores: SAT general 2200, 800 Math level 2, 780 US History. GPA: 3.8, 2 good teachers recommendations and 4 from my ex-bosses.
My best advantages is my work-experience, 4 years.
1) 2 years in National Oil Company, part-time, full-time job. Programming and accounting.
2) 1 year in Ministry of Finance, boss Vice Minister of Finance.
3) 1 year in Switzerland, financial programming, UBS.
4) 1 year as a personal consultant of Prime Minister of Kazakhstan

Thanks a lot!

I think your SAT is a little too low.
how old are you?

Hm, maybe you are right, but I think tests scores it’s just a requirement, just need more 2100+, especially I am an international student. I am 19 years old :)

I think your SAT’s are fine. At my American school, the highest score was a 2210.

Your SAT scores are fine. The goal is to get within the range to be considered for admission and you are well within that range - especially with your SAT II’s. Have you written TOEFL’s yet? It is a requirement if English isn’t your first language I believe (you didn’t indicate if it is or not), but you should probably confirm with admissions about that.

There has been all kinds of speculation on CC about whether it is more difficult or not to be admitted as an international student. I think it probably depends on the country you are applying from. For example, China sends more students to Princeton than any nation other than the US. To be admitted from China may indeed be a difficult task given the overall cultural focus and population. With less-represented countries it may actually work in your favor to apply since Princeton makes a point of advertising the number of countries represented in their upcoming freshman class.

Good wishes as you apply!

Cantiger

Yep, I have TOEFL result, 118. Thank you very much, what do you think about extra-curriculum? Because I worried, It’s more about work, than about volunteering .

Out of a possible 120, 118 is an incredibly good score. Good for you.

In terms of EC’s, I doubt it matters much to Princeton whether you volunteered or were paid. It matters more what you accomplished, how it fits into your overall goals, and how a Princeton education factors into all of it. If you can convey a clear picture of all of this and who you are as a person in your essays, it will help admissions decide if you are a good fit or not.

Thank you very much!

Be aware that your 4 recommendations from your bosses won’t count because Princeton does not accept additional recommendations. Some colleges do, like Dartmouth or Bowdoin.

I have some work experiences and entrepreneurial ventures on my file too, so I attached a simple CV. I also asked my teachers to attest my ability as an entrepreneur.

PS: I got a 118 on the TOEFL as well…but as a Canadian, I guess that doesn’t count.

I still little bit upset, why with good SAT I need TOEFL, just waste of money. Hm, but i put all my work-positions inside my activities, so I think I don’t need write a CV?
Or I can put recommendation inside writing supplement, still attach pdf file :)

Amherst doesn’t require TOEFL if your SAT reading is above 700.
For Hamilton, TOEFL can be used as a part of SAT reading. (which I think is better for you)

For an international student with english as a second language your SAT scores are excellent because I knew an international student with SAT scores in 1900s that got in.

One advice I can give you(something a princeton admissions officer told me) is that many schools would rather have someone with a good focus on one subject that someone that has tried everything. For an example if you are applying for engineering, four years worth of engineering research might look stronger that a little bit of engineering, a little bit of biomedical, a little bit of marketing here and there. In other words, they are not really looking for “scatter brains”. Do you know what I mean?
However, I do think you are a strong candidate as an international student from Kazakhstan so Good Luck!

Thanks a lot! Yep, I understand it, I heard about it from students, but thank you very much ;)! I just want receive excellent liberal arts education. I am not strong in science, but I have lot of work experience. Should I need mentioned my own business in additional information or not?

I think you should attach your resume in the additional section. At least that’s what I did.

Ok, I will mentioned business in essay and in additional information section

Actually, I had earlier attended an info session for Princeton, and they said you’re more than welcome to submit additional recommendations though it isn’t mandatory. It can only help.

O, so,you mean I can upload in writing supplement recommendations from my bosses? Its amazing! Thank you ^^

You wouldn’t send them under writing supplements, but under additional letters of recommendation on the common app, but yeah you most definitely can send them. Probably wouldn’t want to send 4 additional though, it might be redundant and overwhelming to admissions people, 2 additional letters is probably the best number. Good luck!

Hi, I just only now mentioned, that i choose Computer science major, and I need to write essay about Engineering. That mean, I need now doing extra-one SAT Subject test in science? Because I have US History and Math level 2

Or its Ok to use 2 my subject results?
