International transfer to Barnard, USC, NYU, JHU, UMich

Hi guys,

background info: a junior in a top 5 university in China, GPA 3.73, TOEFL 100(about to take another test).
I am super helpless now! I plan to transfer as an incoming junior. I would prolly try out for Barnard, USC, NYU, JHU, UMich, and I know these are all top schools.
Some one told me that admission office penalize juniors for juniors having too many credits, but I don’t mind losing a lot when transferring.
And also, the top universities give their priority to students from universities in the States, while I am an international.
Is my chance in getting in those universities really low?

It depends on how your grades will transfer and how many spots are available; each university will have different requirements for transfer admission. Look at their websites for transfer policies.

You are aware that most schools don’t offer financial aid to transfer students? These are very expensive schools.

Hi there, I am aware that there is no financial aid, and I don’t mind. What worries me is that the websites normally have requirements for US Students, I don’t know how many of the spots are open for international applicants.
And maybe some universities would turn me down because they don’t understand when am I transferring since I’m already a junior? Should I explain in my personal essay???

he fact you’re a junior may be better adressed in an interview, if offered. In your essays,you need to address why the university you’re attending does not meet your academic needs and why the university you plan to transfer to will be better for them. American universities will expect you to spend at least 4 semesters on campus in order to earn a degree with them.
You should try to apply to a few more universities though - high quality flagships that offer strong academics in th field you’re interested in, but are less selective than the universities you listed.
If you indicate your major, people on collegeconfidential will be able to suggest a few possibilities.

Hi, I major in Finance with a secondary in Math, and I will apply for Economic major. What confuses me is what scale do the school I listed take in international transfer students? And I know that UMich takes in a considerable amount of international students

Barnard takes very, very few. NYU and JHU may take some as full pays. I assume UMichigan, being a large, public university, is less restrictive.

I look at the statistics online and Barnard seems to have a fair acceptance rate.
Apparently I noticed my former target schools are not easy to get in, so Here is my updated list:
Barnard (nearly impossible)
USC
UMich
Emory
JHU (difficult)
NYU
College of William and Mary
Wash U in St. Louis
Carnegie Mellon U
Northwestern (difficult)

My concerns are:

  1. how many transfer students do they take in?
  2. will they penalise me for already have too many credits? (I don’t mind losing some in the process of transferring), since ALL I want is to get into a top US school as an undergrad.
