Internet access in dorms & best study areas?

I've read on the NYU dorm website that all dorms have an internet cable, and that the use of routers are strictly prohibited. Does this mean that in a dorm room (with a roommate or two), only one computer can be on the internet at a time?

If so, are there certain specific freshmen dorms that may have full internet access for multiple people (preferably wireless).

Also, where do most students prefer to study? I know this question will depend on the individual's preferences, but where would be the most convenient and quiet place to study? Would it be the Library, or the study lounge in one's dorm, or in the dorm room itself?

No. There is an Internet connection for each person. What they don’t want is you using a router to set up a wireless network.

Although they are installing wireless routers in Lafayette dorm, not sure about the others. We used a wireless router throughout the year anyway, it doesn’t really matter. I think they just don’t want non nyu people using it.

People use routers under the table all the time. You can get busted for torrenting, so don’t do it.

Thanks for the info everyone - so I’ll assume there there are 2 internet cables (or 3 for low cost housing) in a dorm room…

Any ideas if most of the studying occurs in the library? or in the study louge in the dorm or the dorm room itself?

Go to a nearby Starbucks to hangout and study!

wouldn’t it be too noisy in starbucks? xD

are the routers already installed in Lafayette? and if not, there are only two/room? (there are triples in there for the summer)

Grinding in the library is popular. Just reserve a room if you need complete silence

ahh alright, thanks for the info commentcomment !

Stern has really great study areas. The classrooms in Tisch Hall and Kmec are often used throughout the night especially during exam times. There are lots of dry erase boards, projectors, and computers. If you aren’t in Stern you can just ask a friend who is, and use his/her information to get internet access in the buildings. Bobst is really popular but some people don’t like its atmosphere as much.

@rodney I believe the routers are being installed in June or July. There are two internet access outlets per room I believe in Lafayette.

That’s great news - I was thinking that I probably wouldn’t get much of my studying done in the dorm, having a roommate and all…

Are the study lounges in the dorms (ex. Rubin, Hayden, Founders) any good? Is it too noisy in there or is it nice too?
