Wireless Router in Dorm Room

Are you allowed to set up a wireless router in your room? It would be keyed.

nope, you are technically not allowed. i did try and set up one in my room, but you can only register one address in the system, and i registered my computer before the router. so you could if you registered the router first. if you password protect it, you probably wouldnt have any trouble. however, i have heard of some people getting emails "kindly" asking them to disconnect their wireless.

So what kind of connection is it? LAN? I thought all dorm rooms were wireless anyways....

nope they arent wireless. if you go to the nyu its website and go to the resnet section (sorry im on really slow dial up right now so it would take quite some time to get the direct link), you can get a list of every place on campus that DOES have nyu wireless internet. but the rooms dont. bummer =/

I know some dorms have one floor that does (a common floor). Rubin, my dorm, does on the first or second...I think...

So....does anyone know what kind of a connection we have to use in our rooms????

wait...i don't understand why we wouldn't be allowed to have a wireless connection, i don't see how it could cause a problem since internet access is supposed to be in every room to begin w/

littlebusrider8, you're in a crowded city. I'm not an expert, but if someone's broadcasting a wireless signal and it's not encrypted, you'll have everyone and their mom logging on from the office building or apartment complex across the street and next door. It's a major security issue. You just can't count on everyone to manage their own wireless network. That's why it's not allowed.

how easy is it too just get one of those surrounding buildings internet access...i know its stealing internet, but i was just wondering how easy it is...not saying im going to do it or anything.

yeah that's what i would think too. i mean you're in NYC and you're living in a high rise. there's gotta be at least 10 different wireless signals bouncing off at one time and chances are 1 or 2 won't have a pw protection.

but since we dont have wireless in the dorms... we have ethernet connection right? like with the wire i mean

You'd think it'd be easy.

For the record, anyone on Hayden's 11th floor won't have much luck pirating a Wi-Fi connection.

If someone cracks into some shopping mall and steal credit card numbers using your wireless connection, it's your responsiblity.

(although you won't be liable for it, you'll have to go back and forth between police station many times, and your computer will be confiscated....)

Okay...no one has answered the question, still. What kind of connection is in the dorms? Hi-speed w/ ethernet? Dial-up modem???

hi speed w/ ethernet

awesome. thank you.

Yea, actually my dad had a wi fi at his work and a cop used to sit in front of his work late at night to use his laptop, but he had separate routers...one that only worked for computers in his network and one for everyone, why can't we just have a connection that only we can access?

oh and btw what kind of high speed, are we looking at like dsl 300k cable 500k or like cable 5 meg?
