Internet

I know it’s a terrible reason. It’s the only reason I could think of for those who go with only wireless.

This is from the Resnet page:

Wired or Wireless?
With Resnet, you can choose to use a wired or wireless connection in your dorm room.

Wired connections:

are faster and more reliable, especially if you’re gaming or watching streaming video, BUT
someone else can plug their computer into your wired port and use your bandwidth, unless you turn off your port while you’re away.
Wireless connections:

can be slower and less reliable, BUT
you don’t run the risk of having someone using your bandwidth, AND
you can take your computer anywhere in your residence hall and have Internet access.
If you choose Wireless Resnet Only, then you can only access the Internet wirelessly in your residence hall.

If you choose any of the Wired Resnet options, you will also get Wireless Resnet.

what wireless connection do i select to get on resnet? is it the restricted.utexas.edu?

Is there no way I can get free internet in Jester East? I haven’t bought the resnet plan yet but I heard that i have to buy it to be able to access wireless internet. like i can’t use the 500 mb/week free unless i have bought a resnet plan? Can anyone confirm this before i buy the resnet tier? Also, can u cancel it without being charged anything like if i cancel within a few days or is it a one time thing like u can’t cancel it after u sign up for it?

the 500 mb/week is free and you don’t have to buy a plan to use it.

Well during orientation, I was able to use the free Wifi in Jester. I assumed this was part of the 500MB that was free. I’m pretty sure I remember putting in my UTEID and password but I don’t exactly recall the whole process of doing it.

oh i cant seem to connect to the wireless networks (restricted.utexas.edu or the guest one) it says im connected but i can’t get online for some reason. i called the IT help desk and they said ihave to buy a plan to use the 500 mb/week free for teh dorms.

Anyone know how to connect to the networks on campus like in classrooms? It’s not connecting to either the guest network or the restricted one so I can’t use the internet in class or anywhere else on campus for that matter. Anyone have any ideas why? I want to be able to use my 500 mb/week free lol.

Connect to the guest.utexas.edu network and then on the log in page follow the link to configure the computer for the protocol to use the restricted wireless network. After you run the program you should automatically be logged in to restricted.utexas.edu. If not, you can then switch.

I had the same problem for a little while before I noticed that little link that’s less than obvious. I kept trying to log in from both networks and getting nothing. So maybe that will be of some assistance to you.

My resnet (20gb/week) is really unstable for some reason! I have to reconnect and reconnect and repair and try all the possible ways in order for me to get connected to Network 2(or any other working network that resnet goes on…) with luck…Is anyone going through the same trouble as I am?

Oh…and getting connected to the wireless is a bit** too…it requires me to do the encryption EVERY TIME I go wifi… It is really frustrating and time wasting to go through the same process every time. Does anybody know how to get the changes saved on my computer?? I have vista but my room mate’s got XP and he’s experiencing the same problem as well.

Thanks guys. Or else i really need to call up the IT Desk.lol

han, make sure that you are using the default windows utility to manage your wireless. also, make sure you follow the procedure mentioned in my previous post. you may not be getting nothing if you are trying to connect in an area where resnet is not necessarily required (i.e. anywhere but in the dorms). I am running XP and did not run into any problems like you were describing once I did that (see post #29).

Wow… So basically if students live in Dobie or Castilian, they have to buy a resnet subscription for the academic year???

Dobie and the Castilian are not on campus dorms, they have their own internet provided through their services.

How long does the free 500mb last?

What if students from dobie and castilian wanted to study on campus? would they have to buy subscriptions then?

and thanks why two kay for answerng me so fast :D

Every student gets 500mb on the campus wireless. This is more than enough to browse the internet in class, check facebook in class, and do regular studying in the library. I don’t know of many people who ran out. You actually get an extra 1gb per week during exam time, since so many more people use the campus libraries to study.

You can purchase a plan for additional bandwidth for non-residents (people who live in campus would use resnet which counts for the wireless too), but I don’t know of many people who do that. It’s totally separate from resnet.

Also, all websites on the UT intranet (blackboard, file hosts, archives, library websites, etc) do not count towards the 500mb. So if your professor uploads several 20MB powerpoints with videos attached, you can download that without it counting as any of your bandwidth.

So… it’s not really feasible to stream a bunch of videos at the library, haha? Is there any method (wired, wireless, in dorms, etc) that gives unlimited bandwidth for internet?

You can never get unlimited. If you live on campus you can get a resnet package for 4, 20, 40, or 60 GB per week. If you live off campus you can buy a “Tiered PNA Plan” which is 4GB/week added to your on campus wireless bandwidth.

I think every ResNet plan has a set bandwith but yes wired connection in your dorms gives you optimum speed. Actually, the UT Housing and Dining services has a special website (forgot the link) where they have current/latest movies streaming that won’t use up your bandwith!

^ Except those movies are usually a little dated and terrible quality.
