Would an ipod touch connect to the internet at UT like in the classrooms and dorms? Also, would the limit be 500 mb total for each UT student? Do you just login with you UT EID to connect to the UT network or how does it work?

When I went to orientation I was able to connect to the school’s internet through my iphone’s wifi. I just had to log in with my UT EID and password, so I’m assuming the Touch would.

I was able to connect by the wifi on my laptop at orientation but I’m wondering whether there will be more restrictions once we are there.

No, the restricted.utexas.edu is what you will use when on campus. This will require your UT EID to login. I had my iPod Touch already set up to connect to that beforehand, so I was connected perfectly fine. I believe the guest network is normally locked down or something, as students are restricted to 500 MB/week on the wireless. (Resnet doesn’t apply here.)

can someone tell me how to set up my itouch to internet? I’m not able to access the restricted network, but I can access the guest network. Would like to use restricted though. Do I need to download the iPhone exe that’s “required for browsing”? B/c if so, it comes up as an error.

I’m going to sign up for resnet, but it gives me the option to do the wired or wireless one. I’m not sure which would be better. And if I use the wired will I only be able to use Internet on the port I set it up in ?

I was also wondering this M-5. I want to be able to use wireless as well but I don’t know if I will get a good connection in Jester East or not. If I buy the wired plan then do I also get wireless access or is it only wired?

I asked the lady at the front which method I should go with. She said to go with Wired since you get both Wired and Wireless options anyway. Wireless may be spotty in our dorm too. I don’t know why it would give you the option though. And use the plug in your room that you’re most comfortable with since your usage will be based on the port you’re using.

That’s stupid because what is the point of getting only wireless if wired includes both wired and wireless. Is there any advantage of getting the wireless like maybe better signal or something? “Wireless may be spotty in our dorm too.” Which dorm are you referring to here?

Wireless is actually slower. I would think somebody would want only wireless because they can’t be bothered to buy an ethernet cable. That’s the only reason I can think of!

How do I know when I go Wireless if I am using the Resnet bandwidth or the free 500 MB/week bandwidth?

The name of the network you connect to is different.

Oh so if I buy wired resnet then I get whatever plan I choose (let’s say 2gb/week) along with the 500 mb/week free? I thought the 500mb/week goes away if u buy a resnet plan. I thought it was only for people who did not have resnet or other ppl who live off campus.

It gets added to it. (And 4gb a week is the lowest plan.)

What network is your computer supposed to be connected to if you’re on (wired) Resnet? Like, what is its name?

Wired usually just shows up as being a Local Area Connection. Wired networks don’t have an SSID (name) like wireless do.

It says that I’m connected to Network 2 and Network 3. :X My Resnet Subscription page hasn’t finished loading yet, but I’m still able to go on the internet. My wireless switch is turned off.

Oh, nevermind, it says I’m on Network 3 when I’m using wired resnet right now.

Oh, ok. Thanks for your help.

To Samster and all who may be using this argument, you can get an ethernet cable at the co-op for 4 dollars. This is not a good reason.
