If I am planning on getting on skype and oovoo at least 3 times a week for at least an hour each time would I need to get tier 2 or would tier 1 be enough?

You should be good with Ter1. 5gb is more than you think. If you need to, you can always upgrade later for a reduced close pro-rated for the number of weeks into school your wait to upgrad.e

Can I connect to UTs wifi from my dorm room in jester? I paid for resnet last year and didn’t know if you could connect without paying or not…

You get 500 free MB each week on the wifi, but if you live on campus you have to get a resnet subscription. I mentioned this in another thread, but basically my roommate didn’t and he thought he could get by on 500mb, but ITS ended up sending him a message and blocked his internet access.

Thanks I’ll go with tier on then!
and Why Two Kay-- hopefully you read this, since you seem to know so much about UT and stuff do you know when people usually start receiving their financial aid/ loan money that didn’t go towards housing or tuition?

^ Financial aid is given out right around the beginning of the semester. It will apply to tuition, then to housing, and then they will either write you a check or EFT deposit it in your bank account. It all happens on the same day, or at least within a few days of the beginning of the semester.

Okay! Thanks so much!

i have a question - do you need to buy a cord to plug into your laptop for resnet, or is it wireless? because the living on campus guide they gave us during orientation said you need an ethernet cord…

There is wireless access in Jester, but there isn’t wireless in San Jac. I don’t know about the rest. You will need to buy an ethernet cord either way because the internet is a lot faster wired.

Definitely bring an ethernet cord just in case, but I believe as of late this last spring, all dorms now have wireless.

That is incorrect. There is wireless access on the first floor in San Jac. It’s spotty though

What is the speed on the resnet connections ?

The wireless sits around 1.5MB/sec and the wired is usually around 7MB/sec, although at like 5am on weekend mornings it reaches 10MB/sec, the maximum throughput of the wire.

vacheespagnole, I was referring to the dorms.

^It seems that this year all dorms will have wireless internet:

“The Division of Housing and Food Service and ITS are pleased to announce that all private residential rooms on the main campus will have full wireless coverage at the start of the Fall 2010 semester. Please remember that it is a violation of ITS policy to install your own wireless service in any area on campus. Students will be provided with a web link to report any areas where wireless service appears to be unavailable. Thank you.”

@anhtimmy, I lived in the dorms in San Jacinto on the first floor. There is wireless, but it’s crappy. You can even access the signal on the second floor.
