Interview

How many of you had an alumni interview already? If you had one, how did it go?

I had one for ILR. I think it went really well, mine was defiantly more of a casual conversation about anything more than an interrogation of me regarding Cornell and why I want to go there. In fact, be sure that YOU have questions prepared or else there isn't much to talk about

I had mine as well, I was glad that it was very casual. I just felt that I knew way too much about the school I wish I played dumb for that. Overall he was impressed that I was so familiar with the school. I really hope the interview has some sort of impact on the decision eventhough my interviewer warned me that he had no say in the admissions process.

Yeah, they say that, but that makes no sense. Why bother to conduct an hour long interview, bother to type up a report, and then send in the report if nobody is going to pay attention to it.

Was your interviewer from ILR?

Here's a horror story for you:
I had my alumni interview a week ago. It was like a flippin' interrogation!
The lady comes in 10 minutes late, just sits down at my table and takes out her laptop. She then asked me questions for 30 minutes, typing every word I said. Besides the questions, she didn't say anything the entire time. At the end, she told me I could leave, and as I was walking away, I saw her shaking her head as if she were angry I just wasted 30 minutes of her life.
Yeah, so I really hope they don't count the interview at all!

They are not supposed to take notes. You should contact, I looked at the rules and guidelines for the interview they should keep at as low key as possible

Where did you find the rules and guidelines for the interview?

http://caaan.admissions.cornell.edu/Guidelines&BestPractices.pdf

Effective CAAAN Alumni Contact Reports

Check out those two links

thank you!

they took notes on my interview too. But I don't my interview was anything like thekristin1129's interview...mine lasted about 40-50 mins and we talked about my interests and why i wanna go to cornell. I asked him about 2-3 questions and he spent 25 mins answering them. I hope that it only helps our chances at Cornell...

yeah my interviewer was from ILR.

geez! ILR interviews sound dreadful! hotel interviews were much more intimate and relaxed =D

apparently one of the guidelines is "not to take notes during the interview as it may make the applicant nervous." personally i wouldn't mind, but ahhh i have mine in an hour!

my interview was really casual. The woman who interviewed me knew little about ILR though, she was from CAS. She spoke almost the whole time... every once in a while I interjected to ask a question that she rarely got around to answering. I thought it was boring but she seemed to be pleased with the outcome. i don't think it's a big deal at all. Good luck!

i just had my interview : ) it went fine! the man was telling me about wine-tasting class in the school of hotel haha. i agree with what helenrez had to say, so for those who are going to have their interviews.. good luck!
oh he told me that 160 students applied last year to cornell from china and only 6 got in.. since the class of '08 is the biggest yet to come, i think i am rather depressed :(

human ecology said there were no interviews for those applicants..but someone just called me for a meetup?
what does that mean

so the hotel interviews weren't too bad?
mine's this friday...eek!
any advice?

also for hotelies:
the website says that 85%of enrolled students had experience, and I don't, do you think that will severely hurt my application?

doctorjohndorian, its not an interview. Its a meeting with an alumni but it can still help ur chances so good luck. I am applying to human ec as well and I got this alumni interview too. They just ask about ur interests and stuff

I've got mine scheduled for tomorrow right after school.. I was freaking out about it, but after reading these posts, i'm a lot more relieved! My alumni and I are meeting at a starbucks and he told me not to worry about dressing up since he'd be there dressed casually, and he seemed nice enough over the phone so hopefully it'll be okay? I'll go prepared with some questions and keep my fingers crossed for a good report sent off from him.
