Interviews (Andover/ Choate)

Hi!
I have my Choate interview in a couple of days, it is an off-campus interview and will be held before a Ten Schools event. What attire should I wear, and what type of questions will be asked? My Andover interview is a few months from now, also off-campus. How should I prepare for these?

I suggest you Google Prep School Interview questions, and formally sit with an adult to practice…a parent, teacher, etc. You are not trying to memorize the questions but get comfortable talking about yourself and getting out the highlights of your background. The real interview won’t have the same Qs, of course, but you will be more comfortable getting what you need off your chest. Incredibly awkward for the first practice session is a good thing. Do it 3-4 times and have the adult change up the questions as you go along. The real interview will seem like a friendly conversation so you will be more than ready.

Dress: Be aware of the school’s dress code. If the school’s students are casual (sweaters, collared shirts, no tie type) I’d recommend a shirt and tie or sweater and skirt so you are dressed up to be respectful but not over the top and uncomfortable. A clear memory with my son was touring an “informal” school looking nice in a shirt and tie. He was more “dressed-up” than his tour guide and just presented as much more confident and relaxed than the kids clearly uncomfortable in full suits.

And prepare a question of your own in case you can’t think of one on the spot (a “real” question you have is better but). An easy one is something like, Will I have an assigned Advisor and if so will they work with me all four years or rotate?

Our kiddo interviewed with Choate at a Ten Schools Event - it was like Speed Dating! See my other posts on this subject.

Hi!

So while I was at the Ten Schools event Andover was able to schedule me a last minute interview, so I was able to interview with both schools today.

Both interviews went amazing!
My interviewer from Choate said that she was really cheering for me and hoped that I would get into all the schools I applied to and not just Choate. She also gave me some more interview tips for the future and was the reason I was able to interview with Andover. The Andover admissions person was very interested in my hobby of computer programming and said that she really wants to play a game of mine one day.
