and some others (Brown and Yale being my top two choies) and I was wondering how do interviews work? I'm sending in my applications during winter break (25th - 30th of December) and really want to know. I understand what happens within them but how do you get an interview, how do you get informed, are you supposed to get them before you submit the whole application from the commonapp.org or do you get them after you submitted that application?

^I’ve heard that for some colleges, no contact will be made and that you have to contact them if you’re interested in an interview. How would we know this is the case?

Among your list, I applied only to Yale and Harvard (was going to apply some others, but decided against it). After you submit your application, if there is someone available to interview you, they will contact you and set a date. If you want to increase your chances of an interview, you should send in your application earlier.

If you are wondering about the value of interviews, I would strongly suggest that you take any you get. Although the interview is given little formal weight, it helps you establish a connection with someone who will later write to Adcom recommending (hopefully) your acceptance. Plus, it doesn’t take much time to do an interview, and it can only help you.

It depends on the school. Of the ones you listed, Brown Yale and Harvard will all automatically contact you if they have an interviewer available, Stanford will contact you if they have an interview program in your area, and i’m not sure about Cornell or Dartmouth. Some schools, like hopkins and swarthmore, require you to request an interview on their website, it is not automatic. Look on each school’s website for the relevant information
