hi

Could you guys suggest some good us colleges for me. I am studying in India (Manipal institute of tech.) I am in the 1st year and I plan on transfering this year or the next.

I am interested in theoretical computer science. I would prefer diverse colleges to colleges totally focussed on engg as I would like a broad based education for my undergrad but I am not really particular about it.

I need a lot of aid. I can only pay around 2k-4k usd and the rest has to be loans or grants The relevant info is :

Bad part

A disastarous class 12th when I landed a b2 in physics and a c2 in chem. I had a break after my 12th for 2 years. The first year was planned and I wanted some time off before college.

The second year I joined a Pure sciences program but I shifted to a engg program soon after as the pure science program had horrendous teachers. Since you cant transfer in India I had to lose a year.

Non-bad part

Test record

consistantly good scores apart from the 12th class result (As) and scholar badges from my school for all the years possible (6th through 11th). Top 10% through those grades. I should have similar or better grades for my 1st year in college.

best Sat scores (I am told they arent relevant for transfer admissions)
sat 1 1500 800 math and 700 verbal
sat 2 800 math2c
800 physics
790 chemistry
760 writing

Olympiad record
bronze medal at international oympiad of informatics '03,USA (highest scorer from India)
rank 1 in the Indian national informatics olympiad camp '03
rank 10 in the regional mathematics olympiad'03 Delhi. Selected to write nationals.
(I have a distinctive performance certificate in some national cyber olympiad too.)

Other Computer competitions
I have a bunch of state level prizes in computer competitions. Mostly in programming but a few in others such as gaming and quizzing.

I was involved in my school math (member, judge) and cs clubs (director programming,judge,co-vice president).

rank 12 in the Indian national puzzle championship'03.

I have a few other things. I met the Intel ceo in the "Dare to dream" event and I got a certificate from the french embassy for scoring >90% in French in 10th etc. Nothing of much significance.

I had applied to the top grade collegs like mit and got rejected. The mit interviewer had told me that I would probably get rejected since my 12th grades were bad. He told me to apply but said my essays would have to be exceptional.

My school was a A grade school but my college is B+ grade. I have been granted admission in A grade colleges but they arent giving me the major I want (comp sci) so I have not joined them.
