Hey guys, I just got my lab placement. The email said that I could read more at the link to the professor’s profile, but I looked at it and I really don’t know where to get the info on the lab, esp since the professor I got placed with doesn’t really do stuff in my topics of interest. His present research interests are something to do with whole-body vibration and multi-body dynamics… Anybody know where I can get more info? Also, if I’m not sure if the topic is going to be interesting to me, should I still go? Thanks :)

@kairoux, you may want to send an e-mail to the professor to ask for the details. BTW, which lab are you placed in?

Hello everyone! I just found and read through this thread and the information is helpful and encouraging. I got accepted and I’m most likely going. Like a lot of you though I’m still waiting for a response on my assignment.

I’m placed with Dr. Salam Rahmatalla, ([UI College of Engineering - Salam Rahmatalla](http://www.engineering.uiowa.edu/faculty-staff/profile-directory/cee/rahmatalla_s.php)).
I’m kind of scared because I have no idea what his research interest is…

@JimmyMacBoss, welcome. Would you mind to share your states here?
@kairoux, It sounds like a bio-med related. Was bio-med one of you priorities? Again, try to contact the professor to find out what you’ll be doing…

Sure!
I’m a sophomore this year
I have an GPA UW of 4.06
I go to a good Independent School out of state

Thanks for sharing, JimmyMcBoss. Hope you’ll hear your lab placement soon.

@kairoux, It says civil or techological engineering a lot on your mentor’s page. So, maybe your research has to do with that. However, I do see that he has Computer Assisted Drawing (or something like that) under research, so maybe you have a computer science assignment? That seems much more likely because it’s placed under research and it was an option, whereas civil engineering wasn’t an option if I recall correctly.

Did anyone not get their HAWK ID yet ? My D haven’t got hers yet…

Have you got your Hawk IS yet ?? We still haven’t got ours…

you should call the University of Iowa, they asked me a series of questions and then gave me my ID and password

Even I haven’t received my HawkID yet.

I got my hawk id!

HEY GUYS!!!

So I was looking through the many, deep, dark reaches of the internet, trying to find more about the SSTP program… and here I stumble upon my future fellow campers! HEYYY! I got accepted sometime in March, got assigned to Dr. Alexai Tivanski in Nanoscience/Chemistry! Anybody else with me? Or am I alone…

So, it will be me and my twin brother who will be going to this program. Some stuff about me…

List your stats: (all optional of course, but I just wanted to compile into a list)
- Sophomore (how many sophomores are there?)
- Location: IOWA! (well, SD, but close enough…) I thought it would be more regional, but some of you guys are from California, Florida, India, etc…
- Gender: Female (how many girls are there?)
- GPA & other academic info (APs, past awards/programs, related ECs, etc.)
4.0 GPA unweighted
1 AP (Stats), but I have had 4 sciences and 4 maths and a bunch of other classes since freshman year, considering I’m only a sophomore…
Past programs: Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth online class and summer camp in LA, in Cryptology (that was super fun, I’d recommend it to all of you), some other honor programs
Too many extra curriculars, like FBLA, NHS, NSHSS, HOSA, Quizbowl, and 10 more…
I also have lots of musical awards
-My letters of recommendation came from my chemistry teacher and then my anatomy teacher - Choices for field of research - I put Internal Medicine first and Chemistry second, but nanoscience could be considered both, depending on what branch, I guess
- Are you attending SSTP for sure? (Any other programs you’ve applied to?)
Attending for sure

Okay, here’s my pity party story: So, in December, I applied for the Navy research program, and didn’t get in. So, in three week’s time, I got together all of my materials for this application (the recommendation letters took the longest) and submitted it THE DAY BEFORE these were due! The navy program is still my dream program, (they pay you, hehe), but I think almost 6,000 people applied this year, and they accept around 100 or 200… so… yeah…

And I didn’t get my HawkID password either… Mrs. Warren isn’t answering her phone, but I’m going to try calling Monday or so

When you guys see me (asian, with a twin brother) next month, give me a shoutout!!

My brother got placed a few days ago (really late, I know) into a study with New Zealand snails and genders, so for bling3D, that’s your partner!

About U of I: Living in/near Iowa, a lot of kids from my school and a lot of adults I know have gone to the U of I, and I personally know it’s a nice campus and a safe city. (:

Also, did they say they would provide sheets? I am taking a CNA class until the beginning of the program, so I am already starting to pack…

Just out of curiosity: Are Sundays free? I am a pretty dedicated piano player, and I’d like to go to the practice rooms occasionally so I don’t forget too much… And I will definitely bring my tennis racquet, although I’ll probably hit myself more than the ball (:

oops super long post, ah well (: I am an oversharer

@Weiscool: Thanks for sharing your stats, I think most of the interns this year are sophmores, few people here are waiting for lab placements, including my D. That’s cool, seemed like lots of Asians this year, we are Asian, and there are a few more as far as we know. So far haven’t hear anyone in nanoscience, I think for Hawk ID, you need to call admissions and not Ms. Warren. Most people on this thread will be going for sure.
Where and what course are you taking before SSTP ??

Hey WeIsCool! Nice to know about another Asian.

@weiscool: glade you found this thread, and thanks for sharing! Nanoscience sounds pretty interesting. Sure you may find a music company in SSTP besides tennis players :). BTW, it’s nice to have a twin brother!

Quick question:
Have we begun a facebook group yet?
I think that would be a fun/exciting way to keep in touch outside of CC and a way for all of us to connect before the program.
I know a bunch of other programs have made facebook groups already so if not we should… (:

Also anyone with the Geochemistry fellow?

Facebook yesss~

I agree! We should definitely create a facebook group for everyone attending this summer.
