energize, thank you very much! (:

Thanks for the links bbcarol! I haven’t seen the geron.org one before.

**List your stats:/b

 • Sophomore/Junior
 • Location
 • Gender
 • GPA & other academic info (APs, past awards/programs, related ECs, etc.)
 • Choices for field of research
 • Are you attending SSTP for sure? (Any other programs you’ve applied to?)

Here are my stats!

 • Female junior from CA
 • 4.0 GPA u/w
 • Currently taking 4 APs
 • Went to ATDP for 3 years and COSMOS last year
 • No science/math competitions… meh
 • Still trying to decide on topics; probably biochem?
 • Not 100% sure yet b/c it’s expensive; already applied to WTP and may be applying to YSP and HSHSP

Any other juniors?? (:

Sophomore Gal from Calif
4.05 GPA
1 AP so far
JHU CTY for 4 years
2 academic honors from HS last year

Just a quick note: YSP has 500+ applicants so far according to program administrator.

When I talked to the administration (very nice mellow lady) around 2/23 (when I got the email from them requesting for the missing essay), I called them up and talked to them about how many people applied, etc, so not to waste my time… So their answer was they have over 100+ applicants, however, not all qualify for the program, so at the time I was talking to them, they said they don’t have 28 “qualified” candidates. Since Berlin Blank Center specialized in gifted education, they have certain qualities they are looking for. Just like CTY (Johns Hopkins Univ. Center for Talented Youth", they are very very picky on who they allow to take classes, I had to take a SAT to qualify when I was in 7th grade.
They are NOT after your $5000, in fact, they said the professors are donating their time and their grad student’s time on this program, $4000 is for room and board only and $1000 is for univ credit.
Since you don’t see a very “Glorious” advertisement and upfront app fees from SSTP like the other programs, chances are they don’t want to read 500+ applications  Remember they are mid-westerners and they are quite laid back… lol
I think very highly of this program, and I already emailed a few others telling them to withdraw my app. There might be 1 or 2 that I am interested to see how competitive I am.
Any other thoughts ??

I’m kind of excited for this, haha. First time at a program for science! ^^ I was wondering about the selectiveness too though - after all, the deadline had been extended…emailed them, heard nothing back T-T

So what other programs did you guys apply ?? I guess Juniors do have a lot more choices than sophmores.

I got selected for SSTP 2012.

Sophomore

India

Male

CGPA 10, PSAT 198, No APs, no prior program experience

Fields for research: Engineering (Mechatronics) and Computer Science

Most probably attending, but I’ve also applied to EPGY Summer Program.

Topped in various state-level, national and international competitions in science and computers. Sub-100 national rank, including many times in a variety of olympiads and assessments. MCSE, MCP, LPIC-1 certified.

I got a few questions. What kind of research are we gonna do in Engineering and Computer Science fields? bbcarol told me in a thread of mine that EPGY is basically a program for people who have the $$$ to attend it. Is that true?

Lots of sophomores. Last year, we had mostly juniors and a few sophomores. Looks like it might be the other way around this time.

^When you find out your lab placement, you can probably get an idea of what you’re going to be doing by browsing the professor’s website or emailing them and asking. Nobody did CS or engineering last year. (I should have done CS… xP) And yes, EPGY is pretty much for people who are willing to pay the money. It’s not particularly selective at all.

Hmm… okay. Thanks energize. :)

And umm, yeah; how will one use the college credits? How useful are they? Are they really worth the additional $1000?

I don’t think we have a choice to pay the $1000 or not from what I’ve seen from the previous years. It could be count towards electives in college, but I will put a call into them and ask on Monday for sure.
But between EPGY and SSTP, I will definitely choose SSTP. I went to EPGY years ago, and it wasn’t that challenging at all.
I registered today and I am going to SSTP ! Yippee !

Energize:
When is the acceptance coming out for MIT and Caltech ? I have a friend that applied to those schools and no acceptance yet… Wondering if you got accepted yet ??
Thanks and Good luck !

Caltech decisions came out today, and MIT decisions come out on March 14 at 6:28 PM EDT. Caltech waitlisted me.

Okay. Do enquire and get back bbcarol. :)

Depending on what college you ultimately attend, the 3 credits may or may not be transferred. I think that the more credits you have as an incoming freshmen (including APs, summer community college classes, etc), the more “seniority” you have; so when it’s time to select classes, you get to pick before people with fewer credits, and hopefully you’ll get the classes of your choice before all the spaces fill up.
I don’t think these credits will count toward electives because it’s not a class or anything… but again, it probably varies depending on which college it is.

500+ for YSP and only 100+ for SSTP…? Wow, such a big difference. I guess the YSP website IS more informative/appealing than the SSTP website.

Another Jr. Asian male from Colorado!

That’s not bad, waitlisted at Caltech is pretty GOOD ! There is still hope…
Wish you luck, hope you get into MIT ! What’s your major ??
Since you are from Cali, which UC did you apply and get accepted ??
What’s your #1 choice school ??
Good Luck and keep us posted…

Plz provide us all with some stats, like what is your research interest, GPA, PSAT, SAT, etc… We want to build a web forum for SSTP since SSTP don’t have a fancy website telling what they do and how happy the past participants were, etc…
We want to see how competitive this program is compared to the others.
Thank you

Also, did you apply to other programs like epgy, ysp, etc…
