FYI - go to facebook, and search for “Iowa SSTP 2010”, you will find out the stats of the former attendees: 1 in UP , 1 in MIT, 1 in Yale, 1 in UI, 1 in Duke, etc.

Just talked to the admin at SSTP, and here are some clarifications:

This UI SSTP program has been around for 40 years, berlin blank center took over the running of this program last year, so it’s 2nd year at berlin blank. It used to be ran by UI.

Last year was 28 interns, this year will be 40 interns, applications received 120+
All accepted interns are very competitive, all are straight A students, have extracurriculars or honors or science competitions or APs, etc… 2 of this year’s intern are repeat intern from last year, one is from TX.

There will be One night class per week, learning how to do scientific reports, research, poster session, etc… That’s where the 3 units lands. The 3 units are transferrable and is mandatory, you have to be admitted to UI as a non-degree student to participate in this SSTP program.

3 unit course description:
418:001 Secondary Student Training Program 0, 3 s.h.
Experience conducting research under the guidance of a faculty member; presentation of research findings at concluding seminar. Six weeks.

She said it’s up to the transferring university to decide where this 3 units land, they will provide course description if needed.

All interns from last year got their 1st choice lab assignment, and they were happy with their assignment. They will try to place you in another lab if you really really don’t like the lab assignment, but she said it’s hard work to call around and talk to professors to see if they will take an intern…No experience necessary, they are willing to train, so don’t be afraid if you have no experience at all, I imagine most interns don’t have experience in high level research.

There is on campus bus that takes you to the medical labs if needed.

There is a life ! About 2 to 3 nights a week they will have activities at night, so it’s not like there is no life at all, Friday nights and Saturday nights there will definitely be entertainment, and all admission to entertainment are included with the program fees.

Any other questions, you can call the administrator on the acceptance letter, she is very nice and helpful.

Energize,
Do you know who is doing SSTP for a second year, she said 2 interns from last year is coming back this year… What were their research ?? I know you guys have a facebook page, but we cannot get onto the page. Can you find out if it’s not too much trouble ??
Thanks for your help !

Hi guys, is there a deadline for the online forms? When do we have to pay by?

Hello, I got accepted, but I will not be attending because I got into RSI.
SSTP was a safety for me, but I’ve heard that is a great program. Congrats guys.

Ohh 40 interns this year? More fun then (:

@theking101: I emailed Ms. Warren asking about that, but no reply yet! I think we probably have to pay by around April 16 or whenever they decide on final lab placements.

@marzbrett: Congratulations! RSI is a fantastic program, you’re really lucky! Hope you have a great time there.

@bbcarol: I don’t know who’s going back this year, and they’d probably share it with us on the Facebook group if they wanted the rest of us to know, so I don’t really feel like asking. xP (There hasn’t been much activity since about October or so, anyway.)

I’ve been accepted to UC Irvine with Regents and CHP (honors), have been invited to apply for the UCLA Regents scholarship, and received a likely letter from UCLA (only engineering applicants receive this). I applied for Computer Science or Math-CS at most of my schools, except for EECS at Berkeley.

@lilyy96: No one arrived especially late last year; one person didn’t arrive until the day after we started, but that was pretty much it. You’d have to ask the administrators about that.

Hey guys.
Just a quick question about summer programs
So far, I’ve gotten accepted to:

- Stanford EPGY
- Iowa SSTP
- Carnegie Mellon AP/EA
- Columbia - HS Summer program

I’m interested in a top-tier engineering college after high school. Which one should I go for?

Thanks! :)

Hello,

Congrads on your acceptances, what are you trying to accomplish ?
If you want to learn, then take a course, if you want to get experience, then SSTP.
EPGY, Caregie M and Columbia takes almost all qualified applicants for $$
For Columbia thread, see this one, sounds bad…
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/summer-programs/538843-finally-truth-about-columbia-university-high-school-program.html

I am not trying to sell SSTP, I don’t work for SSTP, I am only giving you my opinion.

Good luck on whatever you choose, what other program did you apply to ??

We are collecting some stats, sounds like you are a sophmore, what state are you coming from, M/F, GPA, extra curricular ???
Thanks

One word about advertising:
The more glorious a webpage is, the more $$ they want from you.
SSTP don’t have a fancy webpage, that’s why we are all here wondering how good this program is… From my past experience with Stanford’s EPGY, everything is about money… It was a good program, but not too far from ID tech camps, sally rides, etc…
Stanford has a good name, if you choose EPGY, at least you get a good name on your college application…

I actually have a family friend…their son actually recently finished his undergrad at Stanford. He went to sstp, and his mom told mine that when he did, he had a great experience and that it was worth the time. at that time selectivity was like 25 ish percent.so that’s another input I’ve gotten.

^^Just because a prestigious college’s name is attached to a program doesn’t mean it’s worth anything. EPGY won’t do **** for your application. Having done programs similar to EPGY and somewhat like the other programs you listed, I would say that SSTP is a much more valuable experience. If you can afford it and you don’t have a better program to go to, do not pass it up.

I want to go into mechanical engineering, so I’m hoping to get an engineering related research topic, IF I decide to go…
Stanford EPGY doesn’t seem to be THAT much more expensive than Iowa SSTP, so how come you guys are saying it’s just for people with money…? lol, care to explain?
Yeah, I’m a sophomore, from Texas (yeehawww), 4.0 unweighted and I’m in Science Olympiad for the last 3 years, competing up to the national level.
