IRS DRT Issues/Problems

“We are unable to provide you with your Federal Income Tax Information. Double check the information you entered and try again or return to FAFSA and enter your responses to the financial questions using the information provided on your Federal tax return.”

I have been having the hardest time using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. I’ve been at my desk for HOURS with my TAX information in hand knowing full well that everything I have entered is 100% CORRECT. Why is this not working? I’m not abbreviating anything or anything of the sort. I am EXACTLY typing in the information as I see it on my tax form.

I have tried this on both my father’s account and my mother’s account but to no avail! Is anyone else experiencing this issue? I’m starting to get concerned that this won’t work at all and my financial aid will be revoked. Help!

Is the address the same? Is it listed as 123 S. Main or is it 123 SOUTH MAIN? Is you mother or father listed first on the tax return? Is that the person who has a FSA ID and filled out the FAFSA?

Sometimes it just doesn’t work and you have to fill out the information manually and then provide the school with whatever info they want (tax transcript, W2s, employment info). The IRS tool is easier but sometimes it just doesn’t work.

My father is listed first, however, my mother is listed first on the FAFSA. Both of my parents have FSA IDs and it isn’t working on either of their accounts. The address is exactly the same as it is on the tax form and I have not modified it in any way, shape, or form.

My school told me to call the IRS directly and get the address that way because that is most likely the issue, according to them.

The IRS isn’t going to give YOU the address. Maybe one of your parents, but I doubt that. You need to get a copy of the return as filed for the address, or if they received a refund by check, the address on the label.

If they used a software program like Turbotax, there might be an electronic copy you can check. Also, delete the entire address on the DRT, and re-enter. Don’t try to make changes to the address as you put it in before.

Other reasons the DRT doesn’t work: an amended return or correction was filed; the filer doesn’t have a SSN or uses an ITIN; a non-standard form was used.

If you are trying to get this all done before the end of this month, you may not have time to figure it out. Complete the form manually and then work with the school.
