I have been trying for the past month to get a verification of non-filing letter from the IRS for my financial aid at Tulane University. The online service to get a non-filing letter has been down so I tired to get this mailed to me instead. However, after I go through the process to get one mailed to me, the website then states that the IRS cannot process my request at this time. I have proceeded to call the IRS and go through there several prerecorded points to see if I could get a non-filing letter. Almost every selection related to getting one states to visit IRS.gov and notes that frequent questions are on the website. I have never had the option to talk to someone on the phone either because they are always experiencing “high call volume”. Also, I cannot find anything relating to the non-filing letter on their website.
I cannot be the only one having this issue and I’m very frustrated because I need this form to process my financial aid.
I have contacted Tulane Financial Aid by email and they responded saying that I need to call the IRS, which I had stated already in the email.
I am at a loss as to what I should do. I plan to call Tulane today, but I wanted to ask if anyone else had had this issue.
Basically, it is a form letting the college know that you didn’t have to file taxes for the previous year. I haven’t worked in the past years, so I need to show proof that I don’t need to file taxes or send any of the forms.
From my understanding, it is only required of those who have been requested by financial aid to verify you didn’t need to file.
Update: I just talked with them and they have stated that there is a worksheet online and I do not have to contact the IRS. They had the wrong directions in my financial aid requirements.
Have you gotten the letter yet?
I am actually in the same boat as you… I have actually gotten a hold of someone on the phone at the IRS, they mentioned that they would send me the letter, however I’ve waited and waited, and it still has not come in…
The financial Aid office said that they can still process my financial aid when the letter comes in, as long as it is before the Spring semester starts.
My problem, however, is that I NEED the letter, and it has not come in… I am at a breaking point and have grown extremely impatient… Has your letter come in?
I’ve sent a few forms by the mail, and waited two months, and that’s when I called. Still nothing.
