So I think I did the retrieval tool (I’m finding this whole process pretty confusing) and it shows as a change to the FAFSA. The confirmation page shows ten schools to which the changes will be sent. So, like other changes I made to update the FAFSA, do I need to go back and add the additional school so they will receive the “retrieved” data as well? Also, it indicated that the parents’ income needed to be entered; somehow they have the total income amounts and AGI but didn’t have it broken up (line 7 and line 12). Help please.
Yes. You will need to do just what you did the first time…you will delete the schools from THIS FAFSA submission, and you will add the remaining schools and submit again.
You can’t do this until this FAFSA has processed.
Yes…we had to enter parent one income also…and then it calculates the balance which should be parent two. The wages/income line on your FAFSA and taxes has the total for both parents…so when you enter one parent, it subtracts it to get the other parent.
Thank you, guess I did it right. Didn’t realize the “tool” was an actual change but I guess that makes sense.
Yes, you are actually doing a change. When you link to the IRS tool (I did this for the first time myself this year…with some guidance from some posters here), you are making changes to the FAFSA…the info from your tax return will populate onto the FAFSA. You then do the income thing…and resubmit using the PIN numbers.
At what point do you do the IRS Retrieval Tool? Taxes were filed on 3/2. FAFSA was estimated, then updated when actual tax numbers were complete. Forms uploaded (waiting for IDOC to catch up). Did I check a box for the retrieval tool when completing the FAFSA and I just don’t remember?
Well…here is what I learned. On the FAFSA there are three questions. One asks if you filed your taxes within the last three weeks. I don’t honestly remember the other two. If you are able to answer NO to all three, you will get a link to the IRS DRT next IF it is available to you. It actually takes you out of the FAFSA site…so it’s u likely you did it and didn’t know!
Another thing…the DRT will not be available to you if you owe the IRS money, and have not yet paid it. That all has to clear before the DRT is available
Thanks @thumper1.
