"IRS tax data transfer required via FAFSA"?

My parents are not required to file their taxes so we haven't filed for 2012. Do I still need to complete a IRS tax data transfer to get my financial aid?

On my college's website stating my financial aid award, one of the requirements is "IRS tax data transfer required via FAFSA". On FAFSA I had previously accidentally said that my parents "would file" for 2012 when they eventualyl decided not to since it wasn't required of them anyway. I editted the FAFSA to say "will not file" just yesterday.

It will tae some time for FAFSA to say the correction has been processed right?

^You may want to send to school a copy of “Verification of Nonfiling” from IRS.

It can be requested by Form 4506-T “Request for Transcript of Tax Return” See http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506t.pdf

You did the right thing in correcting your FAFSA, but you will also need to have them complete the school’s Parent Statement of Non-Tax Filer Status. If you can’t find the form on their website, call to ask about it. There may be other requirements for your parents, as well, so be sure to ask what is needed for your particular case.

Would be much easier to jsut have your parents file returns the next several years. They can file for free.

There is no reason to do that just to get financial aid. However, sometimes it’s a good idea just because there may be some tax credits for which the parents are eligible that they wouldn’t receive otherwise. But in terms of aid, it is not difficult to fill out the non-filer statement - so there is no reason anyone needs to file if they don’t technically need to file.
