Is 2240 enough for ivys?

I want to go in pre-med
So i was thinking about universities such as Duke, UPenn, JHU (not ivy), etc.
Will a 2240 on SAT be enough?

It’s possible!

Nope. That’s horrible. Only a 2350+ is acceptable.

A better score can’t hurt you, but you’re in the range.

Plenty of people get in with scores like yours. A lot will depend on the rest of your app. As someone has suggested, though, a significantly higher score might help, if you think you could do it.

Obviously the higher the score the better, but a 2240 is definitely in Ivy League range. If you look at their score ranges on Collegeboard.com I think 2240 should be above the average composite for every school out there, so clearly it comes down to so many other things.

thanks a lot for your responses guys!

i had wanted something is the 2300s so i think i’ll give it another shot in october
after seeing so many people get >2300
i was beginning to doubt my chances
haha

I got 2240 my first time too, and decided to retake it as 2250 was my unofficial cutoff. This time I got 2260 for a 2290 superscore. I’m happy and I think retaking was worth it. I didn’t prepare at all for the second try either.

2240 is great. don’t waste any more time on it. focus on other things as they (especially essays) will usually be the deciding factor.

2240 is fine, as long as you have other things going for you. It definitely won’t ruin your app, it won’t take you out of the running.

I know many people here who got less than 2200 here. Passion counts for a lot more than an extra hundred points on the SAT.

I think it may actually depend somewhat on the breakdown, but other people would know more than I do. Either way, good luck!

how about 2210, guys?

anything above 2200 is amazing.

I got waitlisted with a 2140 at Cornell, so I don’t think a 2240 will hurt you-though it probably won’t help you either.

Yeah… as long as you have a 2000+, then you have somewhat of a shot at the Ivies… because then they start to really look deeply into your app.

^I had a 2210, but I decided to retake it in october because my math score wasn’t where I wanted it to be. I ended up with a 2290, superscored to a 2320. If you can pinpoint an area to work on, I would suggest retaking it.

@mcvcm

i disagree. 2000+ is not nearly enough for ivies. im not saying you can’t get in with a 2010 or anything, but people who do usually have a strong reason behind it. the fact that they are looking deeper into our apps (which i don’t think is actually true… i think theyve looked pretty deep for years now) is only a reason to want a higher score so they don’t have to waste time thinking about your academics, and spend more time on who you really are. if you are serious about an ivy, i suggest 2200… and 2240 for hpy.

Well if we look at the middle 50th percentile at Harvard, yale, and princeton the average is about a 750 on each section. So 2250 is the average score. That means that half the people who get in have less than that score. The bottom 25% is at about a 2100 for those three schools. So to be safe…i would say 2100+ puts you in the running.
As for the other ivies, the averages are a little bit lower than that. So in general I think a 2200 is a good score and it puts you in contention for any of the Ivies. This is of course granted you have good grades, a tough schedule, and good extra curricular involvement. good tests wont make up for lacking in the other departments.

ok don’t be biased with the score results. there are probably 5 users who posted a score of 2300 plus. and numerous others who post stuff desiring a 2300+. so a few people out actually scored this high, and other people are just dreaming about scoring this high. reality check. it’s called the exposure effect. obviously, if you’re around several people who get a super high score who you talk to alot, it wont matter if 99% of america scored lower than you.

I’ll tell you from what happened to me. I got a 2020 on my first SAT and a 2170 on my second. I got into Duke and Stanford. That comes off as really snobby, but I just want to make the point that SATs are not everything. It’s a three-hour test, and it can only reflect so much. A score above 2150+ I think is good; above a 2250 is great.

Also, think about the ACT. I personally liked it much better.
