hmm, it's not that you have no chance, it's just that you definitely need to apply to some safeties, too. even the best of students can get rejected from JHU and the Ivies... and gtown is only a step down from the ivies. I mean, I think you stand a pretty good chance at any of them, but you don't want to be college-less just in case they all reject you, you know?

also... are you a girl or a guy? 'cause there's Barnard (all girls) in NYC, which does cross-registration with Columbia and so you could take a lot of Columbia classes. it's a Seven Sister and a pretty good school in its own right.

3.7 gpa is not low depending on the courseload that you've taken in high school, and also your class rank. For instance, if you're in the top 10% of your class and have taken one of the most rigorous courseloads available at your school, your gpa is fine.

no im a guy...and we dont rank so i dont know my %...i think its top 10. and i know i need safeties, i was just wondering about the schools i stated because thats where id prefer to go. i will def apply to safeties too

Have you considered Washington University in St Louis? It wouldn't be a safety, but it's a little easier to get into than Ivies / JHU / Gtown. More along the lines of Tufts.

i looked at it a little but i think i want to stay in the east coast area...like NC up to new englad

just wondering.. my school grades on a 100 point scale rather that a 4.0 scale.. does anyone know how the conversion works?

93-100: 4.0 (A)
90-93: 3.66666 (A-)
87-90: 3.33333 (B+)
83-87: 3.0 (B)
80-83: 2.66666 (B-)

etc...

My GPA is 3.84uw, but my ranking is like the top 30% or so. That's because the 4.0ers don't take any AP classes and literally are not taking any math or science their jr. and sr. years. And there are only 91 people in my grade. However, the colleges are not going to know that! What can I do? Do I still have a chance?

also do good SATs help compensate for soso GPA? like 2200+?

taffyluchia -- Yes, the colleges will know that, because your counselor will send a "school profile" with your application that lets them know about the distribution of grades, how many people in your school go on to college, or whatever. Also, that will probably come through in your recommendations.

ILoveBrown -- I'm aware of the school profile (or is it called school report?). While the distribution of grades will show the max and mean GPA, it won't show the schedule of the people with 4.0! What if Brown just assume they have a schedule similar to mine? That would be totally unfair because I have the hardest course load in the class.

p.s. I love Brown too!

taffyluchia -- if you're concerned about that, you can talk to the college counselor who's writing your rec, and make sure that s/he explans the fact that the GPA's in your school are not weighted, and therefore the students with more challenging classes often have lower GPA's than those who take less challenging ones. If you have the "hardest course load in the class," then this should definitely come through in your rec letters from your counselor and your teachers.

This is also a good thing to bring up with your alumni interviewer if you don't feel like it comes across strongly enough in your application.

Ilovebrown does it help at all that the part that brought my GPA down was freshman year?

Sure. An upward trend in grades is definitely a good thing.

alright (my freshman year was like half Bs half As, sophomore all As, this year is like all B+ and As but in much harder classes)...i made this whole thread because i just took midterms and was really depressed beacuse they were kinda hard. i vowed to work very hard second half of year and hope for the best with colleges. wish i could get it out of my head. precollege is very depressing :p
