So today I found out I got a 790 in math II, which is somewhere around 80th percentile. Is this bad? Is this going to ruin my chances of getting into UPenn or Rice? Also how would this affect my chances of getting into the Northeastern and UConn honors programs? Thanks!

In short, no.

I would gladly take a 790 on any test. Use it–it will definitely not hurt your chances.

I’m in the same boat. Took it twice to get an 800, and got a 790 both times. UGH.

Why is this even a thread?A 790 score will not “ruin” your chances at any university. Stop focusing on scores that are already high enough and work on other parts of your application. 10 points will not make a difference and in case you get rejected it wouldn’t be just because you didn’t get 800. There are people with lower scores who still got into top universities.

I would think that 790 on any 800 scale SAT test is fine.

This question is not quite as absurd as it may seem, because the Math II test is different from other tests in terms of the percentiles. It’s true that a 790 is something like an 80th percentile, because quite a lot of people get 800 on this test. But this happens because this is a highly self-selected group in the first place. Many fewer people take this test than some other SAT IIs, and they are mostly more advanced math students. So I think that it’s highly unlikely that a 790 on this test will be viewed negatively, especially if other scores are high.

The question has been answered. There is nothing to be gained by keeping this tread open.
