790 math level 2, good enough for top universities

I got a score of 790 on math level 2 and i am applying to the elite colleges. Is a 790 good enough score for those elite colleges or should i retake again ????

It’s good enough. Don’t retake.

[/sarcasm on]
With a lousy score like that, they will throw your application right on the trash heap.
[/sarcasm off]

Uh, obviously if you’re ten off of a perfect score… you did well enough

No, don’t retake.

Whether your elite college accepts or rejects you, it will not be because you scored a 790 instead of an 800. Indeed, the result will likely be the same if you do get an 800.

It’s always you Math 2 kids. :stuck_out_tongue:

Seriously though, I’m not sure where someone got the idea that you need an 800 on the Math 2 subject test from, but just think about it for a moment. It’s 10 points out of 800. If we convert that to a 100 point scale (which is admittedly imperfect) then the difference between an 800 and a 790 is the same as the difference between a 100% and a 98.75%. Would you ask a teacher if you could retake a test you got a 98.75% on?

Have you seen some of the kids on this forum? My guess is, yes, they would ask for a retake :)

The reason he is asking is because the scoring is so odd for math 2. You can miss about 5-7 problems and still get an 800. Almost 20% of testtakers manage that.(In 2007 it was 9%, 2012-15%, 2013-17%, 2015-your guess.) Someone looking at the 800 score can’t tell if you missed one question or 5. But as soon as you get a 790, they know you missed quite a few questions.

That said, I am sure the commenters above are right about it not making a particle of difference in admissions. My D retook a 790 to get 800. Her choice and the only test she took twice. I think it was probably a waste of time, but she wanted to do it.

Edited to add: My D really enjoys those kinds of tests, so it was no bother and was offered on a Saturday when she didn’t have another activity to miss. OTOH my S hates all of these tests ,finds them torture and would not retake a 790 for certain under any conditions, even if did in fact mean missing out on some opportunity. So he is sensible.

It’s in the mid 50% for MIT admissions.(770-800)
At least 25% of admits have 800, but 790 is a perfectly reasonable score
