Is 8th grade the only time you can try to get into prep schools?

I was wondering if you had to enter prep school freshman year or if you could go in junior year.

You can join Jr. year.

May I add, it will most likely be much harder to get accepted junior year, but you can definitely apply.

You can go as a freshman, sophomore or as a junior as well. At each grade up though there are fewer and fewer spots so tougher to get in.

Thank you! Do you have any advice on what school I should try? And what qualifications I may need?

It’s not that much harder to get in sophomore year than freshman year. Although there are less openings, there are less applicants. Junior year is significantly more difficult and some schools don’t accept incoming juniors.

This is what an AO from a top boarding school told me about admission to junior year : “One needs to be a very strong student, have excellent testing and also be involved in a variety of areas at their current school.” In other words, it is possible to get accepted to boarding school in junior year, but it is tremendously hard. Good Luck !

The 9th grade has the most open slots for applicants. The number of open slots generally diminish as the grades get more senior.

As an example, take a look at Phillip Andover’s CLASS DISTRIBUTION for grades 9, 10, 11, 12:
