Is a 155 on the PSAT bad?!

Hello, I'm a freshman and I just got my PSAT Score of 155. Here is the breakdown:
CR- 59
M - 39(Horrible :P)
W - 57
Also, does anyone have any advice as to how I might improve my PSAT score for this October?

You are a freshman, so no. It is kinda of good for you that you are starting to prepare now. However, keep in mind that the next time you take it, it is still not going to count for the NMQST. Please don’t give yourself a brain aneurysm before you’re a junior.

With that said, you can always help build your vocabulary by reading more or learning a new word a day. For writing, as you are still young, I find taking foreign languages helps one learn grammar (Latin and Spanish help me so much!) and colleges love them and you will love knowing them too. Don’t sweat the math score, I am sure you haven’t taken all the math courses yet that are coved by the PSAT. Just try and challenge yourself in school.

As a freshman that is okay considering I know some juniors who did not score much higher than you. Without even really studying, that score will go up at least twenty points next year, and if you really apply yourself, you will see dramatic improvement by junior year

Thanks so much for the replies!!! Any more thoughts???

well it’s not really a ok score. you have to realize that you can’t just think that ‘oh i’m a freshmen this is good enough for me now.’ because there are tons of people out there who are freshmen and get way better scores. and 155 is not even average…it’s a 64%. and that converts into a d in school grading system and that’s not a good grade. i’m sure you never wanted to/will want to get a d in a class. so i’m just saying don’t think that you’re good enough now. motivate yourself and improve. cus if you wanna go to a decent college 155 wont do it.

i got a 164 sophmore year this year 217 but it took a lotta focus and determination during the summer… direct hits= GOD of vocabulary… but ya just teach yourself to really focus when you take these tests and algebra 2 helps a lot i think at least and im guessing you havent done that yet but math is my standardized test weakness so dont take my advice for it. And then there is a lot of the same categories of grammar rules that appear so you should learn those cuz that helps a lot too… the most important thing to remember though is that focus and quick analytical skills are mandatory so teach yourself those basically by taking practice tests- id wait till after frosh year though cuz idk but that seems kinda early to worry about this

I wouldn’t worry too much about it!
You have a lot of time to bring it up, if you want to know I got a 155 freshman AND sophomore year. I was pretty much crushed, but this year, I’m a junior, my score basically jumped 50 points without an insane amount of prep.

The math score is bad, I’m sure most people can agree on that. But it doesn’t mean you suck/can’t improve; you math will improve with time, as you take more courses and such. Do some drilling/practice tests over the summer, and a bit of grammar review, and I’m sure you can get a high score next year or the year after.

My sophomore reading/writing scores were around where you are now, and I managed to get those both up to an 80 this year without excessively intense preparation, so I wouldn’t be worried at all.

rachelee92 was frank and I appreciated that. People, there was no need to attack her. Also, thanks again for some of these inspiring responses! :)

A 155 isn’t a very good score at all. However, the fact that you’re a freshman definitely accounts for a big chunk of why you didn’t do so well.

Get acquainted with this site and forum and follow CC’s advice. Ask any questions that you have (and as long as they aren’t stupid or too frequent, you’ll always get a response). You’ll undoubtedly need to do quite a bit of practice to increase your score, but if you commit yourself (and being on CC really helps), you will see a dramatic increase come sophomore and junior years.

Don’t worry about it…like everyone else said, you’re only a freshman, so you probably haven’t covered a lot of the math and grammar concepts. My score jumped 20 points from sophomore to junior year with no prep at all (something that seems to happen to a lot of people), and since you are motivated to improve your score, you’ll do fine! Follow the advice from others on this thread. Also (my two cents) I would recommend a lot of reading in your free time! You don’t realize it when you’re reading, but it helps an incredible amount with vocabulary. I’m not sure what language you take, but if you’re taking Latin you’ll have an advantage as well. Good luck and don’t stress yourself out now! Save that for your junior year…

I’ll be honest, although I might sound rude or harsh…
If you’re aiming for Ivy League schools or any well-known 4-year colleges, it’s terrible. A score of 190 and above would be honorable/ mentionable.
If you’re not, your score is average or even good. But thousands of students all over the country are studying and preparing for these kinds of tests from a very young age and FANATICALLY…but it’s not too late for you, even though you’re already in high school. Just study and really drill (as I always say:) the materials and problems in the tests thoroughly.
I was the literally the dumbest kid in the class who just liked to play around, but I studied like mad after some big hurtful incidents. I studied just about anything I could get my hands on. I brought up about 180 points in each section of the SAT in one year, and got 191 on PSAT in freshman.

That’s around the average of my school. It all depends on your standards. On my standards, that is a terrible score. :D

^Stop necroing threads to showoff your scores …

I agree with LoseYourself. Different people have different standards. 150ish is the nationwide average. But, if you’re like me, you won’t be satisfied with just a 150, even in freshman year. I going into freshman year, and I’m scoring 2100s on the SAT, going for 2200. Improve your PSAT score by doing SAT prep. :)

You guys realize he posted this 7 months ago and he won’t know/about read your replies? Don’t grave dig threads Fortis…

whoops didn’t notice

Fortis nobody cares. A freshmen score doesn’t matter to any colleges, so no IVY League colleges are going to care about any “honorable mentions” or any of that sort. They don’t even care about Junior Year scores.

You fail to notice that a cold score freshmen year doesn’t matter, or even sometimes Sophomore as well (if it’s cold). It’s what he gets next, or even the one after that, which actually matters.

Well, I definitely didn’t score 190 and above on my freshman PSAT. However, I can guarantee you, Fortis, that you can’t score higher than I did on the SAT.

^ Let me guess a 2400.
