Is a business degree from SDSU worth it?

I was admitted to San Diego State University (SDSU) for fall 2011 as a freshman and I’m planning to get a degree in finance. I’m just really worried, however, about what the actual value of my degree will be. How do potential employers view a business degree from SDSU and will they look down on it because it is not as prestigious as degrees from other universities. I’m just really scared that my degree won’t mean anything and I’m considering just going to the community college for two years and trying a more prestigious school later.

I can’t comment on SDSU specifically since I’m on the east coast but unfortunately (fortunately?) finance is a field that is very prestige-driven. If you do well there, I’m sure you will get a job somewhere but the best jobs go to the people from the best schools. I imagine this is the case for all majors but it seems to be more pronounced in finance; right or wrong, that is the truth.

I would try to transfer to a better school, either from SD or a CC. I went to a state school for two years, got a 3.9 and was accepted to Georgetown last week and I’m crossing my fingers for NYU (Stern). It takes work, but it’s doable.

I have 2 friends who got into finance work from SDSU. 1 majored in International Business at SDSU and got into a hedge fund firm when he graduated. He has been there almost 2 years now and makes great money dealing with oil purchases in texas or something.

The 2nd person actually majored in Finance and got an entry level job at TD Ameritrade while he worked on his Series certifications. He is about done with those tests after about a year, maybe a year and a half, and is the lead in his department with a company card and all.

What do they both have in common since their majors are different? They are both highly energetic, go-getters who went after what they wanted. Sure, they both wouldn’t have had an easy time getting into goldman-sachs, but they have great jobs and are only 2 years out of college at most.

Side note. My wife and I are accounting majors at SDSU. She is graduating in 2 weeks and has had a job lined up at a firm-to-remain-nameless starting at 52k. For a lower-tier state school, their business department is exceptional.

You know, I’ve considered switching to accounting. Could you please explain to me the difference between Finance and Accounting since I’ve had a hard time finding a straight answer to that? Are you part of the BMACC program?

This offers an interesting way to convey the difference between the two.

I’m a little late on the finance at SDSU thing here, but my cousin majored in finance there and is now working in SF as a financial advisor
