Is being deferred always a bad thing?

I applied to UNH, and was deferred. They requested to see my semester grades. Is it a kiss of death? Im OOS (MA). My GPA is a 2.5 because my freshman year of high school I failed 4 classes, and one my sophomore year. I got 1740/2400 and 1140/1600 on SAT (CR 630, M 500, W 600) i was suicidal and eventually diagnosed with ADHD (what my essay is about). I have really good recommendations, and I have taken 4 AP classes (two last year:3s on both exams. Two this year) everything else i take is honors. I'm trying to look at this in a positive light, because I thought i would be straight up rejected because of my GPA. I'm hoping if i have a really kick butt report card ill be able to get in. I already set up a tour for this thursday. What else can i do??? Does anyone know the statistics for how many deferred students at UNH end up getting in? I heard they're pretty desparate for out of state students because of money.

P.S. I would also be a valuable member for their cheerleading team. I was central Mass athletic all star for my division, and just about every coach in the area has begged me to cheer for them. I'm known for how dedicated I am to cheering, and the 30+ hours a week I spend training. plus the team is co-ed so they need small girls, and I'm 4'10 and 90 pounds (if anyone understands what any of this means)

Any advice? please?!

It’s not as good as being accepted but is better than being rejected outright. Depending on the school, many students who are at first deferred are eventually accepted.

In your case, they’re probably looking to see how your grades turn out, so do your best this semester.

I had a similar story with terrible freshman/sophomore grades, and I was accepted to all the schools that deferred me after they saw me get a 3.92 my first semester Senior year.

Nope! My friend applied early action to Stanford and got deferred. He was all mopey and told me that deferred people only have 15% of getting in…

But, he got in :).

I’m not applying to Stanford though. Overrated.

I’m not sure that deferred applicants have any better chance at a school than a regular decision applicant. I could be wrong though.

If you were in admissions and you saw an app with F’s on it, wouldn’t YOU want to see how senior year was going? Junior year was your only successful year so of course they want to see if you’ve really straightened out. I can’t get how you failed stuff and they still let you into AP classes???
