Is Brown a possibility and a good option for me?

I am currently a HS sophomore, I know that may seem early, but I’m trying to get an idea of realistic options. I am VERY into politics and have a bunch of GREAT ECs connecting to it whether it be interning with my Assemblywoman, interning at a defense “think-tank” in Britain, being an activist for certain politically related things, Student Government, Model Congress etc…I went Africa this summer to do community service, led a local movement against the Genocide in Darfur…I could go on and on about my ECs

My grades are meh though and I expect between a 3.3 and a 3.6 Final GPA when I graduate although I hope for better

I’d also be very good in an interview and my essays and recommendations should be outstanding, I don’t get straight A’s, I’m more of an A-B student

If I do well on my APs, SATs, SAT 2s etc…

I want to be a Political Science Major…is Brown a good and realistic option for me??

If you want to know any more about me to help guide me better feel free to ask…

If your class rank is under the top 15-20%, I’d say no. Also, no one can make a real guess without information about your testing scores.

of course you’d have a shot but, relax and, just see where it goes

understandable, i guess i should reveal more info…but i definitely don’t plan on my test scores being below ivy par at all

i agree fredmurtz thank you and also is brown good for political science??

^ idk how you know that your scores will ivy par as a sophomore, but w/e. there’s gotta be something else in your app that makes up for your low GPA. Could be from few different things. Just know that it gets harder year after year

i totally understand what you’re saying swim2daend…I don’t know that my scores will be Ivy par, but what I was saying is I am determined…I guess I really should’ve listed all of my ECs and such to help u guys give me a better idea, but I see what you guys are saying and what I need to do to keep Brown open as an option for me so thanks for your help

Ya. brown is definitely an option. I would not give up at all in your situation. Just make sure that something stands out in your application,

Brown is not a realistic option for you, in my opinion, if your academic performance at your current school is not outstanding regardless of your SAT/ACT scores. Exceptions exist for recruited athletes, legacies & URMs. Brown allows leeway for all three listed categories of applicants.

well with the exceptions, there are definitely some that could get in without the hook but the hook doesnt make up for a lot. i mean a minority with an 1800 and a 3.5 and not in the top 10% still doesnt have a shot of getting in.

My question is: how do you know that you’ll always be an A-B student? Why not strive for all A’s? It’s not a question of who you are as a person, it’s a question of how hard you’re willing to work. Don’t just dismiss good grades as impossible. Sit down and study like the vast majority of other kids who get into Ivies. It’s not going to be a cake-walk, but it will be rewarding in the end.

I 100% agree with you tsong…back in middle school i took advantage of my ability to not have to really study for a test and do well so when I entered high school it was like running into a brick wall…what I meant when I said I was an A-B student is that is what i’ve gotten up to this point, but this year should be MUCH better and the following years as well…despite what some of you may think the info u have given me helps more than you can imagine…THANKS!!
