As a high school sophomore, I will be a section leader. In junior year, I most likely will be junior editor, and in my senior year I’ll be co-editor-in-chief of my school’s yearbook. Is this impressive/not?
Depends for what caliber universities.
It’s definitely strong leadership, especially if your yearbook is good, and I’d you apply for Arts/Humanities.
It’ll certainly be strong enough for your state flagship and public universities known for strong journalism.
It’s literally a dime a dozen for Ivy+/Little Ivies/Claremonts, would be well considered but wouldn’t be a differentiator unless the yearbook wins a national prize for instance.
It is a perfectly good EC that shows dedication to a club, leadership etc. That said it will not make you stand head and shoulders above the crowd for top tier colleges – keep in mind that there are over 25,000 high schools in the US and most of them have yearbooks.
You have a couple of posts asking if one club or another will give you a boost for colleges. IMO the best thing you can do is to pursue clubs, activities, volunteering, sports or whatever it is you like and work towards making meaningful contributions to those groups. Let your ECs show that you are an interested, involved student. In short, stop stressing and do the things you enjoy.
When you think about there are how many people across the country who hold leadership positions for yearbook. It is not an uncommon ec but that doesn’t mean it isn’t considered leadership. Aren’t you doing it because you enjoy it. If so then why worry about impressing anyone and if your doing it just to impress why do it. Do ECs you enjoy and don’t worry about colleges thinking these are impressive ecs. That isn’t the purpose of ECs.
My daughter was the yearbook editor. It was very time consuming…lots of work on the weekends, meetings with yearbook companies etc. She loved it, yet at the same time the job was often stressful and she did her share of “venting.” She never questioned whether it would look good on her college resume…that never came up in any conversation. She accepted the position because she wanted to do it.
I would categorize this EC as “average excellent.” It shows leadership and dedication, but it will not tip the scales in your favor at top schools. If you think you will enjoy it, then do it!
The impressiveness of your ECs/leadership positions doesn’t depend on the name you slap on it but rather, the experience you got out of it and how you will use the experience to better yourself.
That said, don’t drop yearbook for a different club and leadership position that you see as prestigious. If colleges can tell that you have dedicated a lot of time and patience to your ECs, then that means more than how impressive a club is. If you like what you do at yearbook, keep at it
