Hi, so recently I got my ACT score today and this is my third time taking it and I've gotten a 32 each time. I do really well on the English and Reading section (35-36 on both), and get around a 30-32 on the science but I always screw up the math section which brings my score down. For this test I was finally able to bring my score up to a 30 but of course my reading and english scores went down to 34's, so everything evened out back to a 32. Math has always been the class I've struggled in, getting a B every year (though I do take the hardest offered class and was 2 years ahead growing up because of advanced math placement). The thing is since my scores have been so consistent part of me is just done, but the other half knows that I literally haven't studied at all for the test and that if I actually sat down and took the time to prep I could get at least a 33. So anyway do you think it's worth taking the test a 4th and final time or would it be a waste with my track record.

Feb ACT - 35E, 27M, 35R, 30S
April ACT - 36E, 28M, 35R, 30S
June ACT - 34E, 30M, 33R, 32S

I think whether you take it again or not depends on your choice of colleges. Are your scores in the range that are accepted to the places you want? If so, then it probably isn’t worth taking them again, especially because you have already taken them three times. I suggest that maybe you try studying for the SAT instead because there isn’t a science section and the math is supposedly easier. By the way, a 32 is still a very good score so congratulations!

Most schools superscore anyway, so you already have a 33.

thank you! I’m totally happy with my 32 but the problem is I really really want to go to uchicago and I have no hooks at all and my ECs suck because I didn’t exactly spend my high school career doing spectacular things like I see a lot of accepted applicants doing so basically this was my last ditch effort but my options are looking bleak right now so i might just have to find another school sadly

I asked my counselor if I should take the SAT and she said that since i grew up in the midwest and have been prepping for the ACT in my hs curriculum I’m not prepared for the SAT so I don’t really think I’d do well on it? Also I’m applying to college this fall so I feel like it’s a bit late at this point to attempt it

bump
~for another opinion?

I personally like the ACT better so I took that twice and am happy with my scores. But since I just worry a lot I am studying for the SAT this summer and taking it in October. So I think maybe you should just take a practice SAT and see how it goes. It isn’t too late to attempt the test.

I might try it. thanks for the advice!

Rates of diminishing returns. As stated above, a super scored 33 will check off the box that says “sufficient”. No school is going to reject you solely based upon a 33. Standardized testing is probably more of a initial filter than anything else. It makes sure everyone who actually makes it to committee might last a couple minutes of debate rather than being unanimously being tossed out.

I visited UChicago in early June and one of the admissions counselors actually said that when they print off the common app along with all the supplementals it is about 20 pages long. He also said that the ACT score will only take up exactly 1 line on that 20 page application, and that the rest of the application including the essays are more important than your 1 score. Basically as long as your essays are superb you should be fine.
