is it a good or bad idea to have a UC rep read your personal statement?

One UC rep offered to proofread my essay, and gave me her email. Im pretty much just wrote it, because I wasn't sure I was going to apply or not until last week. I don't know if I should email or not? Since its not that great.

also would it be a bad idea to email previously professors about possibly proof reading it?

Hi,

I just had my personal statements proofread by an English professor at my college. She gave me really good advice! I highly encourage you send it to the Rep because they may get busy later on. Earlier the better =]

Well UC reps aren’t actual admission officers, so if you’re paranoid about it hurting your chances at any UC, I don’t see how it could. If you’re worried about a UC rep somehow relaying your personal information back to an admission officer and discussing with them your essay, I’d tell you that would be highly unethical and extremely unlikely to happen. Other than those types of concerns, for me there’s no justification for not sending it.

It more sounds like you’re afraid of being judged on your essays, but you have to see there’s really nothing to be worried about. At worst someone judges your essay as being bad without giving you any feedback other than to tell you it’s bad, which has no tangible repercussion other than maybe your ego. What’s much more likely to happen is that you’ll receive quality feedback from people that can really help you with your essay. Since you’re struggling a little as it is, they’ll probably give you some really helpful ideas on how to better your essay.

If you’re still worried about being judged though, just email it to them with a disclaimer that it’s a very preliminary draft and that you anticipate making significant changes and hope that they’ll help you with that process.
