Is it good or bad to use the optional letters of recommendation?

Hey guys,

I’m a freshman and I’m having a bit of trouble with recommendations. I didn’t do a great job participating in class etc. my first semester, and since I only took four classes, I don’t think my letters of rec will be great. Probably generic.

However, I did have a really strong letter of recommendation from a professor I took a class with in high school (I dual-enrolled). Is it worth using this as one of the optional letters of recommendation? Normally I’ve heard that doing so is usually not smart (extra time for readers to read, padding, etc.) but since my other rec is probably just okay, what do you think?

Thanks in advance!

How far back ago did you take this class?

Junior year. Is that too far back?

Bump. Should you use the option of sending additional recs or could that annoy adcoms?

@BoogiesareCool I heard on here and other online sources that you don’t want to overload the reader if the letters are repetitive in nature and don’t offer anything new. However, I was in your position so I had the option of the teacher just printing the letter and I asked my high school to send it along with my transcript.

@BoogiesareCool To be honest, unless it is a super special rec you got from your teacher that knew you really well, Junior year is too far back. They want to know what you are like now.
