is it hard to transfer among different colleges in UVA?

I am applying for College of Art and Science, but I am also interested in Materials. Is it difficult for students to tranfers among these colleges in freshman year and upcoming years?

In general, in UVa and at most other colleges, if you are unsure about engineering or other programs, you should start with engineering. It is easy to transfer from other programs into the college of arts of sciences and still graduate on-time, but if a person transfers into engineering, they may have trouble with the progression of classes, and it may require an extra year.

Charlie gives good general advise. For specific advise on either transferring to SEAS from another part of the university, or transferring from SEAS to another part of the university, information is found in the SEAS Student Handbook. It used to be easily viewed on the SEAS website. It has been moved to a pdf format. The information you want is on page #33, 4.19 and 4.2.

To remember is that you have applied for the College of Arts & Sciences. This is a separate and unique acceptance process from engineering (SEAS). It’s a different pool of candidates and different criteria are considered (just as they are for Nursing, Architecture, and Kinesiology). If accepted to CLAS it’s not simply a matter of calling and saying “Hi, thanks for the acceptance I’d like to study engineering, just move me on over.”. Your acceptance is for the school you applied to. That doesn’t mean you can’t transfer, and it certainly doesn’t mean you can’t take classes to prepare and make yourself an attractive candidate if you know that’s your goal. There may only be a couple of SEAS classes that CLAS students would have a hard time getting.
