Transfering between schools at UVA

D1 is a first-year student at UVA and is really enjoying her first semester in the College of Arts and Sciences. She has started thinking about her potential major and is coming to the conclusion that she wants to transfer to the E-school for Civil/Environmental Engineering (never mind that both of her parents are engineers and have been telling her that she has an aptitude for engineering for the past two years:)). She has earned AP credits for calculus, environmental science, government, and history and has been taking a variety of liberal arts courses this semester. It appears that the engineering school has a well-defined curriculm and that the fall courses are not offered in the spring. Additonally, she would need to apply to the e-school. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

If your daughter has any questions I would suggest she talk to either Mary Lane or Carolyn Frey in Thornton Hall. These ladies are amazing and know everything there is to know about everything. They are exceptionally patient and helpful as well.

Wow! Thank you very much for the informative response!

No worries! My son is a second year in the e’school and loves it.

Also, in case you haven’t made your way there yet, here’s a link to the Civil & Environmental Engineering Department as well as the degree curriculum for the class of 2016.

Best of luck to your daughter as she explores this option and decides if this is right for her.

In general, for other people reading this, if an incoming student is undecided between engineering and arts and sciences, I’d recommend they start in engineering. That is because is it usually not difficult to transfer from Engineering to the College and still graduate on time, but to transfer to Engineering may require some extra time.

I would agree Charlie. I don’t know how this is handled with the 8 semester rule. I would assume part of the transfer acceptance would take into consideration how easily the student could ‘catch up’ to their peers. A summer semester could help with this.

blueiguana – does the requirement to graduate in 4 years extend to SEAS? I though it only applied to the College.

Hi AVA!

I had to search, but on the UREG SEAS page I found the following (about 1/3 down the page under Academic Rules & Regulations):

[School/College: - School of Engineering and Applied Science - University of Virginia - Acalog ACMS?](<a href=“School of Engineering and Applied Science - University of Virginia - Acalog ACMS™”>School of Engineering and Applied Science - University of Virginia - Acalog ACMS™)

So eight is the expectation, summers if necessary. I won’t make any assumptions as to what the exceptions might be.

Thanks for digging that out!

There are also a good number of environmental majors in the college if she decides to stay - have her research Environment Thought and Practice, and Evironmental Science.
