Is it harder to get into NYU Stern or Carnegie Mellon Tepper School of Business?

Thanks!

Stern

From a purely objective basis, NYU Stern. NYU Stern’s acceptance rate was 13% for the Class of 2015, while Carnegie Tepper’s acceptance rate was about 17%. However, they are both excellent business programs and factors like cost and fit should be considered in the process.

Do you think Carnegie Tepper’s acceptance rate is higher because of self-selection?

Hi guys, I just wanted to post an update that I paid my deposit to Carnegie Mellon. After visiting both colleges, I felt like Tepper was a better fit for me than Stern.

Can you explain why, perhaps summarize each visit and explain how you reached that conclusion? It’ll be useful for future readers in the same situation you’re in, or contemplating Tepper.

If you were accepted into both why did you care which one was harder to get into? Trophy collecting?

@“Erin’s Dad” I just couldn’t find out NYU Stern’s acceptance rate.

hi, I visited NYU during the weekend. I’m going to list out 10 reasons I decided to choose Tepper over Stern:

  1. I don't really like NYU "large" class size (relative to Tepper). NYU's large class size will make it harder to distinguish oneself from one's MANY talented peers (I may be wrong about this xD).
  2. I prefer the campus feeling of CMU, even if its not the best looking campus.
  3. I know Stern helps students get jobs at Wall Street; however, I also heard that 30% of Tepper students work at Wall Street, meaning that going to Tepper will not hurt my chances of getting a job at Wall Street (if that's the career path I choose).
  4. I heard a lot of Stern students talking about how they are interning during the school year and during the summer. I know internships are important for a business major, but I'm scared NYU Stern would basically force me to take on many internships to stand out from my ambitious Stern peers.
  5. I want to minor in Computer Science, and Carnegie's computer science is amazing.
  6. I did not feel like I fit in NYC.
  7. I'm interested in entrepreneurship, and I feel like Carnegie has more resources to fuel my aspirations.
  8. NYU STRONGLY emphasizes study abroad, and, personally, I'm not interested in study abroad.
  9. Tepper is also pretty prestigious (i think?), and Carnegie Mellon, as a school, is more prestigious than NYU.
  10. Although Carnegie is known for highly rigorous curriculum, I think NYU Stern is even more stressful because I would have to take many internships to distinguish myself from my peers. Correct me if I'm wrong.

You will need to build your own path and create your own profile. It’s not like high school where overachievers want to ‘do more’. No employer will expect more than two semester-internships and typically, one (or even none although that’s rare at Stern) would be sufficient if you have good summer internships starting the summer after sophomore year. The same expectations would apply at Tepper.
I don’t think one is more stressful than the other in itself, although it’s possible students at Stern put more pressure on themselves due to the high energy in NYC.
Prestige shouldn’t come in (there, Stern wins, but it doesn’t matter).
You need to decide based on the environment that will be good for you. If you’re happy and comfortable, it’ll help for the days when you’re upset because nothing goes right.
It’s good you managed to choose your best fit but make sure you choose knowing your personality and not because you fear you can’t keep up - no one is admitted who can’t make it do you’d be fine at either. But yes both schools have two different personalities and environments and deciding based on the one you like best and most likelybto help you bloom is the way to go.
