Is it just me, or are there a lot of people lying about their SAT scores...

It seems like a buttload of people are claiming to get really high scores, like 1400+/1600 and 2000+/2400. Now I realize that most of the people who are willing to share their scores probably did well, but there seems to be an awful lot of people scoring in the 90th percentile and above on the SATs. Where are the 1000s and 1100s?

It's safe to say that this site has a pretty self selected group of applicants.

People who score in the 1000s and 1100s are less likely to be posting on internet forums about getting into college.

I got a 1790/1180 on the SATs...and a 29 on the ACTs... shrug

Well, this site is self-selective, and the people who receive low scores tend not to be those who care as much about academics as those here. Therefore, not too many come here.

I assure you that I indeed did receive the score I said I did.

Yeah most people will lie about their SAT scores on here. Although this is CC so we're talking about "geniuses" here. One of the many reasons why I refuse to post my scores or get chanced.

i don't understand why someone would post a fake score (for chance threads that is) i mean the whole point of the chance threads is to get an honest assessment right?

Yeah, people who take the time to post on a forum about college are, more often than not, going to be smart kids.
Oh and I have an 1860/1210...so I def. dont fit the CC stereotype of super duper scores.

I don't fit into the CC stereotype either. I don't really want to either.

Sometimes they just want to look good/boost their ego instead of getting chances. Or sometimes they 'estimate' what they will get and but it down as their actual score- you can see how the real score might be lower.

But, yup, how many 1000s do you know who would fuss this much about college? And if a really really good student (AP classes, etc) just can't take tests and did that poorly, they'd be worried and ashamed. They wouldn't post their score anywhere because people would rip them into shreads and basically say that they have no hope- which really isn't true.

Yep. Anyway, here is the source for the true number of high SAT-scorers.

http://www.collegeboard.com/prod_downloads/highered/ra/sat/composite_CR_M_W_percentile_ranks.pdf

I was just wondering, did any of you guys ever get asked to list your score from the SAT Writting section, like on an application or for scholarships?

I didn't have to for the one I applied to so far... PHEW. I look like a genius as long as you don't count my writing score, haha.

Yeah, the writting section was complete bs. I read somewhere that there was a direct correlation between essay length and essay grades. How am I expected to write a good, interesting, well-structured essay in like 25 minutes. Oh well

You have to send your scores via the College Board to all your colleges (with the exceptions of a couple random colleges), and the score reports include all of your scores, including your SAT I Writing scores.

True, but some scholarships just want the guidance counselor to list math and verbal.

All my colleges know them, haha, hopefully my admissions essays will show them that I can form a sentence. Or maybe they'll be able to glean that from my CR score.

Maybe people think that if they lie about the scores enough, they really will raise :). I didn't lie about mine, but I know how you feel. Seems like every 2400 in America posts on here.

I think the majority of people here ARE telling the truth. The SAT is a test that can be mastered through studying, and the good majority of people on these forums have devoted a lot of time to just that, so it's no surprise that a 2100+ is common here. Hell, before I came to this site, I had a 1650 SAT, which, through a summer of studying, I managed to get up to 2000+.

I got a 2520!!!

But in all seriousness, there are two reasons why you see such elevated scores on college confidential...

One, CC frequenters tend to be more motivated, scholarly (and dare I say neurotic =P) than your average college applicant. When is the last time you've come across a "Chance me at my local community college" thread?

The second reason for these astronomical SAT scores is that people who post in threads relating to SATs like to gloat =O

A lot of colleges report SAT writing scores in their admission statistics and report that they regard the writing score as one element in the decision about whom to admit.

College Search - Yale University - SAT®, AP®, CLEP®

College Search - Harvard College - SAT®, AP®, CLEP®

College Search - Stanford University - The Farm - SAT®, AP®, CLEP®

This website isn't a representative sample. at all. Totally biased towards high scores. Don't be discouraged.

But these people likely aren't lying about their scores. It seems a bit silly to lie over the internet, no? Who are they impressing?
