Is it ok if my common app essay and individual college writing supplement have similar content?

Some of the colleges asked me to describe my interest in engineering and any experiences I had etc in 500 words. For my common app essay I’ve chosen to write about my interests which again is engineering. because the supplements are so long I had to reuse material from my common app essay in them. Will this create any issues with my application?

You’re basically sending the same essay twice? Bad idea - the point of every additional supplement is to learn something NEW about you.

There’s not a lot I can do when they ask the same question twice though?

My kids were careful to not overlap in their info. The Common App question isn’t asking about engineering, you have just chosen to answer it that way. You won’t like this suggestion, but if you were my kid I’d suggest you rewrite your common app essay on a different subject.

Im not the pro, but dont reuse anything. You can write about similar things, like engineering. But make it original and add something new, like maybe one “small” experience that may not be the longest subject, but definitely can be a pointer in your supplementals.

Take the advice above to heart, redo your common app essay

It really depends how similar the essays are, but for the most part, the general thought is this: use different stories for each essay.

The college gives you supplements and essays for a reason; to gain more data points about you has an applicant and to “hear” your story; it’s a shame if you can’t give the school a new dimension in your application by utilizing the same topic twice.
