I'm in 8th grade and I'm running on about 15 unexcused absences. I have straight A's and I'm taking the hardest courses that 8th grade offers. Some days I just wake up and don't feel like going to school. My philosophy is 8th grade doesn't really matter and as along as you're not over the absentee threshold that will get you in trouble (20 days) and I have good grades then I should be able to miss school when I feel like it. My mom goes crazy when I tell her I'm not going but I understand where she is coming from. I obviously won't carry this habit into High School. So what do you guys think?

i actually have the same problem i guess (i’m a high school junior). the best thing is to commit yourself to a lot of activities (not too many obv) but enough that you feel compelled to go to school everyday. some days i’ll still go through and see when’s a good day to skip, but i’ll realize i can’t (monday, volunteering; tuesday, presentation; wednesday, play practice; thursday, important club meeting; friday, play practice)

I think it’s a bad mind set to get into, thinking that school is optional. Wouldn’t it be easier just to get on with it, even if your number of absences isn’t going to directly impact you college decisions.

Well, I’m a Chinese student. I’m pretty sure that I have more pressure than you guys. Of course I sometimes really want to miss the school, everyond in my class dose. However, no one really miss it. You should remember that if you do once, you’ll continue doning it. It’s not okay! Don’t give up! I really admire you for your ability to take so many classes. That’s really great. And I guess your class must be pretty interesting, at least better than my science classes. Just don’t miss your class, Okay?

My school has a rule where if you have an “A” in the class and have not missed more than 3 days you don’t have to take the final so there are some days that I really don’t feel well or just don’t want to go to school but the incentive of not taking the final and having a week off is what drives me to not miss days of school.

It never works that way.

I’m actually home today, after pleading in with a headache… It’s distinctly cowardish, I know, but sometimes I just can’t face school. It’s so hard to pretend to be like everybody else, when I just want to tear my hair out sitting in a class where I’m learning absolutely nothing, in overcrowded classrooms with other students texting/talking/etc. That is, when we actually have a teacher. Recently with the budgets sometimes we don’t even have any.

Feeling pretty disappointed in myself right now. I don’t know what I’m going to do- I start high school next year, which means there are four more years of this to go.

Um… yes, it is fine to miss school. Just tell your parents you’d like to stay home, make sure you have friends to tell you the homework, finish it early, and relax.

Unless you go to private school or play a sport, I don’t think it matters

to be honest, it doesn’t even matter in most high schools as long as you maintain your grades

I miss school all the time, and I’m in high school. I think it’s fine if you know what you’re doing. Though every subject should ideally be extremely exciting, engaging, and full of room for meaningful discussion, the courses some of my teachers have created are extremely boring and unhelpful.

I should’ve probably mentioned the fact that my brother was in a similar situation to me, but he ended up dropping out his senior year; hopefully i don’t end up the same way
