The application's fifth essay option lets you create your own question. Now obviously, the admissions people at UMCP know what the common app questions are this year. If I go for the #5 option as my second essay and just make my question the same as, or really similar to a common app question, would they not like it? It feels like they'd see it as a lazy thing to do.

I have no doubt there are dissenting opinions on this issue, but I personally don’t see a prob with adapting one of the essays you wrote for the common app for the create your own question if it is a really strong essay and highlights a part of you that you might not show elsewhere.

I personally think there is enough of the Maryland app that requires original answers (not found in common app). So, I don’t see this as being lazy unless the essay is not well-written and it’s obvious you didn’t put any effort into your application.

However, if you really are concerned, then try writing another essay. It may turn out to be a stronger essay anyway and then you will avoid the nagging feeling of doubt while awaiting the admissions decisions.

Best of luck!

if it’s your own essay, then you should have no worries. It’s your work no matter what. Recycle all you want. Good luck

agree 100% with colormaker…I reused my OWN essays for several different schools
