Is it possible to change majors if you have been admitted to binghamton as a freshman?
i applied as interested in economics but want to change to accounting.

Yes… You can generally switch majors within the school you were admitted to. But if you wanted to be SOM but you were admitted into arts and sciences. You’d have to apply for a intercollege transfer. I believe…

is this the website for it?

[Binghamton University - Academics: Schools and Colleges: School of Management: Prospective Students: Undergraduate: Internal Transfer Students](http://www2.binghamton.edu/som/prospectivestudents/undergraduate/inttranfers.html)

You were admitted into Harpur College (interest in Economics), and wish to switch into the School of Management (Accounting). You can only do so through an IUT (Intra-University Transfer), and only after completing:

() at least 1 semester at Binghamton, and
() completing microeconomics (ECON 160) AND macroeconomics (ECON 162), and
() completing EITHER Calculus I OR Statistics, and
() receiving a grade of A or B in each of the above courses

Good luck!

at least 1 semester at Binghamton *

does this mean I can apply only for the Fall semester or I can apply for spring semester while currently in the Fall?

It says November 15 for the following Spring term deadline and March 15 for the following Fall.

You would apply for the Spring 2011 semester while completing the Fall 2010 semester. You would need to take the above three courses and receive grades of A or B. You would need to apply by November 15, 2010.

Be advised that microeconomics and macroeconomics are not easy course, and the Economics department suggests waiting a year prior to taking them. Don’t rush to try to IUT to SOM!

But if i don’t transfer within my freshman year, wouldn’t i have to graduate binghamton after 4+ years? (bachelor’s degree)

No, because you can concentrate on “General Education” courses. Students at Binghamton (and most 4-year schools) have to complete a series of requirements in ADDITION to major requirements in order to graduate.

You can review the GenEd requirements here: [General Education at Binghamton University](http://gened.binghamton.edu)

However, sometimes major classes also fulfill General Education requirements. In general, though, as long as you focus on completing GenEd requirements your first two semesters – you’ll be fine. Both microeconomics and macroeconomics work towards General Education requirements, and statistics and/or calculus fulfill the math requirement.

Many people are unsure of their major within their first year, and only a few majors here require you begin IMMEDIATELY in order to complete in 4 years – for example, most majors within the Watson school.

thanks a lot BingAmbassador, you’re very helpful!
