So we had our Junior Conference and it was very discouraging. The counselor made it sound like there was no hope. Average is an 85.9 and pursuing music performance and/or theater. Looking mostly as Suny schools. All music and theatre classes are 100. All county, tri m honor society and volunteer work though music. What are the odds?? Any suggestions for schools in or out of state that won’t break the bank?
Has he taken the SAT yet? What is your budget? What size school does he want? I’m not familiar with SUNY schools, but I can assure you he will get in somewhere. Colleges that are trying to grow their music programs like musicians and at some schools, they are not held to the same academic standards if they have talent.
I have been through this with D20. She had a 3.5 and low SAT and is studying music next year at a LAC with a conservatory. S22 is also a musician and has grades similar to your son. Not sure if he will study music, but we are looking at schools with high admit rates and artsy students. We will also be looking at OOS community colleges with dorms so he can get the residential college experience and get a reset from his less than stellar high school record. That is always an option for your S, too.
You may want to post this on the music forum as well.
Of course it’s possible to get into college with. B average - especially in music and theater.
My son got into 9 out of 11 colleges with that gpa, as an engineering major. With merit. You will be fine. What is your budget? Have you taken any standardized tests yet?
With respect to SUNYs, look into, in particular, Purchase and Geneseo.
Budget is under 30 really closer to Suny tuition which is about 25 w room and board.
He was scheduling to take the Sat on March 14th. So no test scores.
Many SUNY schools will be happy to accept you with that GPA. Go through this list on the link below and look at the websites of schools that appear in your academic wheelhouse to find good fits.

SUNY Purchase is particularly strong in the arts – it will be a bit of a reach but worth looking into.
Thank you!
