Is it possible?

Guys!! I am an international student from the Mid West. I have a decent GPA (3.8/4). My grades have been consistently above average in all of my high school tests. Other than the SAT, all of the other admission factors are on my side. I took the SAT on November and got a 1640 :( (540W, 590M 500CR). I am considered one of the top students in my school. But the SAT score has forced me to question my capabilities.

I really need to improve my score. I have a year to do so. I really want to apply to top liberal arts colleges, but my SAT score is killin me. One of my senior, (he was among the top student) just got 1800+ even after numerous SAT attempts. So I am really worried if I can raise my score that high. So do anyone of you think that I can raise my score to around 2200+ in a year? Is there anyone here who have raised the SAT score form 1600 to 2100/2200.

Also, if you think 2200 is impossible for me. What score range would you expect from me after a year?

Please give me some good suggestions.

Sign up to Kaplan Test Preparations. They guarantee a raise of at least 20% from your first SAT. I raised mine from a practice SAT to the real SAT by about 40%.
Yes, it costs money. But it’s worth it!

Good luck, you can do it!

Take the ACT.

Yes…try the ACT and you might be pleasantly surprised

No offense to Leonidas, but I strongly discourage taking the Kaplan test prep class. Speaking from personal experience, not only is it costly, but also does not teach any strategies that you can’t learn by reading the test tips in any SAT practice book (I recommend princeton review)

In the end, it’s still a matter of personal determination that will get you the score you want.

Buy the blue book put out by collegeboard and take practice tests. You’ll see pretty quickly if you’re scores begin to improve.

In my opinion, only you yourself can raise your scores, not so much a tutor. Read the plethora of SAT guides here, and take and review official SAT tests, and you will improve.

thank you everyone!!! :)

Actually, I thought of ACT too. The only reason I didn’t go for it was the lack of availability of the ACT preparation materials. I have plenty of SAT preparation guides unlike ACT, which I downloaded form the torrent. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a single ACT material there.

Also, in our country most of the students opt for the SAT. So even the bookstores don’t have much of the ACT preparation materials.

I also didn’t have any choice between SAT and ACT due to the lack of ACT preparation materials.

@xxeroxx since you have a year to prepare, then I would suggest read different varieties of writings. I guess it would help in Critical Reading

For test preparation, for me, I guess Barron’s was the most helpful followed by Princeton Review. You can also try out the Official SAT (published by collegeboard).

And for practice tests, you can use Princeton’s ‘Cracking the SAT’ and if you are comfortable giving an exam online, then you can give 3 free tests on sparknotes.com as well.
